cooking parchment paper for PP bullets

Post by mdeland »

I was cooking some caribou tender loins the other night in the oven on parchment cooking paper and after feeling it a bit wondered how it might work as bullet patching. It measures .002 ,is food grade, fire resistant and quite tough. Any body ever given it a try?

The only PP bullet I have is one I cut for a .303 Enfield so I will give the paper a try on that bullet and see how it does. The parchment paper feels just like the onion skin paper one buys for wrapping bullets.

mike, if your patched bullet fits as a slight friction fit in the bore as you chamber it, it should shoot.
groove diameter it needs to be a sliding fit into the fired case.
the paper is tough, and might well suit hunting ammo.
for serious target shooting, a slightly thinner paper might be better.
my own experience with cooking paper is that it is not as easy as some to get a clean folded fit on the corner of the bearing surface and the base.
it is all about fit of patched bullet where it has to go.
keep safe,
bruce.

Kenny,

You might want to check Mapquest. Venice to Anchorage 79 hr., 4900 mi. Might want to give Mike a 4-day notice when you're halfway there, unless you fly low a lot faster and longer each day than I do.... LOL!

mike,

If you are suggesting bore diameter paper patched bullets with smokeless powder I think that is a bad idea as it has leaded the bore of my rifles pretty bad the few times I've tried it. I think it's much better to go with patched to groove diameter with smokeless.

Now if your running BP in your .303 Enfield patched to bore might work.

I do believe Brent has tried cooking parchment. He's not using in matches that I have seen so that might tell you if it's worth trying or not.
