twist vs weight

Post by gaffer »

Thanks to MLV for the info on my barrel. Now that I know that I have a 34 inch 45-70 free bore barrel with a 1/21 twist. Would it be better to load a heavy ( 530 gr) bullet seated long or lighter (513 gr) seated long or what??? Thanks Gaffer

Gaffer: With a 1-21 twist it would be best to stick to bullets no more than about 1.25 to 1.30 inches long to stablize properly. Nominally, Shilohs of that vintage should have had 1-20 inch barrels but whatever.

As for seated long or deep. Try a few different loads. Your rifle will tell you what it likes best.

I hope this helps.
