I have a 45-90 sitting on the shelf at Shiloh. I intend to pick it up sometime next month. I will be taking some loaded rounds with me so that I can make some smoke with it before returning to Texas. What would be the preferred length of cases? These cases should shrink by .003 to .005 on this first firing.
It is a standard Shiloh Chamber. Your thoughts on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Also, what brand of cases do you preferr?

Don--I have 400 of the BACO cases from stretched Remington brass and 500 Starline cases in 45-90. Both work just fine as is. No leading, no paper rings, yada, yada, yada. I have shot the BACO brass for a number of years, and have had to trim the occasional case from time to time. I trim to 2.395.
Either brand works with either grease grooved or paper patched bullets in all three of my 45-90s with the standard chamber, and both brands work in my bull barreled Roughrider with the tight paper patch chamber.
I would say get whichever is convenient, load 'em and shoot 'em and enjoy! Congrats on the new rifle. Shoot straight, rdnck. _________________ Chairman, Phd

Relatively new at this too. Should one target 2.4" measured on sized or fired brass? Running Starline in mine and none are up to 2.4 yet.
M Charlie sent me some stretched cartridges to assess chamber length, but I've not fired them yet. So much to do and so little time. _________________ 1Minute |

| I am keeping it really simple. When I sort new brass, I put those that are 2.10 or more in the match/paper patch lot and those that are between 2.10 and 2.095 in the second to be used for practice and short range shooting. This seems to work well in my 45-70. I do the same for the 45-90 (2.40 in one lot and those less that that in the practice lot) After firing and full length sizing the brass is trimmed to 2.10 and 2.095, same with the 45-90, 2.40 and 2.395. Have not had any problems with paper rings or leading so far. Those that are shorter than 2.095 or 2.395 are culled out and scraped. I use winchester in the 45-70 and starline in the 45-90 and really have had a very few that are shorter that my minimum length. |
