2019 SE Regional

Post by Jim Kidwell »

This was the 16th S.E. Regional and was attended by 45 shooters from 18 States including some from as far away as Canada, Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Ohio plus the Southern States.
The first day, Thursday, was to be a 200 Yard reduced .22 cal. match. The weather did not want to cooperate and we started out with cool temperatures and threatening rain clouds. We were able to get in the 200 Yard relays before the clouds opened up and we had to cancel the rest of the day. Friday morning started with great weather and we were able to complete the match and get in two of the 600-yard relays before the shadows covered up the targets. Mark Harrison, from Florida, was the Match Winner of the .22 match with an excellent score of 296 – 8X. He was closely followed by Doyle Clark, Tennessee and Jim Shride from Illinois.

In the 3x600 Yard match, Willie Pool led the pack with a 183 – 2X, BTW, this was Willie’s first target rifle attempt and he was converted immediately. Kevin Hurst, Georgia, and Randy Franklin, NC, were hot on his tail, with a 179-2X and 177-2X respectively.
Richard Wood, “Woody”, organized a Trapdoor Match with 6 shooters competing. Again, this year it was won by John Bly from Virginia. John shot an excellent score of 177-2x with his stock Trapdoor and was rewarded with one of Woody’s line boxes.

In Scope Silhouette, the Saturday and Sunday Silhouette matches were also rewarded with excellent weather conditions. The mornings started in the 30’s but with the sun and clear skies, it warmed rapidly into the 60's. You couldn’t ask for better conditions to shoot in. The animals stood out against the white berms and we had light switching winds to make things interesting. Doug Gazaway did a fantastic job on the range and was rewarded with a lot of Kudo’s from the shooters.there was a shoot off for Match Winner. Ted Tompkins, Montana, and Gerald Parks, Georgia, met at the chicken line for a 5 shot relay. Ted showed us how his Schuetzen experience paid off when he dropped three chickens to Gerald’s one. 3rd Open was won by Woody. In one relay, I witnessed for the first time, three shooters cleaning the turkeys.
In Iron Silhouette, we also had a tie for Match Winner, but it was not settled by a shoot off or chicken count. Ian Egbert, Ohio, ceded the match to John Bly. He reasoned John out shot him on all the animals except chickens. I thought that took a lot of class on Ian’s part. Charles Cumming from Canada was 3rd Open winner with an excellent score of 55.

Saturday’s barbecue by Danny Cruikshank of Shade Tree Barbecue was enjoyed by all with a menu of beef brisket, Texas red sausage, pulled pork, Georgia Brunswick stew, Baked beans with peaches, slaw and topped off with to die for chocolate brownies. It was chilly eating in our outdoor pavilion, but I think everyone went away satisfied.
To sum it up, I think everyone had fun, which I always insist on. ☺

We watched Ted carefully to ensure he didn't. Great match. One of the best shoot-off's I've seen in a long time. Ted shot and hit two sighter's, then three of five chickens during the shoot-off. John Bly had some great scores shooting his Trapdoor. On the first relay, you will notice that he beat all iron sight shooters with that "old war-horse". I did notice, while shooting silhouette on Saturday, that John did not have a proper line box, so it was only proper that he won one as the "Top of the Pile" trapdoor shooter. He looked complete on the line on Sunday. During the evenings, after the shooting, several of us gathered and enjoyed some great meals and company. Life don't get much better.

Indeed, was a great match regardless of the wet drive down & 1st day rain-out. Was good to see so many folks again after being 'away' for a couple of years. Plus, I'm guessing I'm the only one who got a deer during the match (nice 7-point buck that was given to the target setters). Will find out today how much the match really cost me. A very well run match and we all thank Jim, Doug & Steve for their efforts in preparing for and running the matches. Congratulations to the winners (think all us shooters were winners just by getting to shoot). Looking forward to the River Bend Feb 2-day BPCR 'cabin fever' match (hint, hint).

Yes, Ted behaved himself. He stayed with Charles Outler and Charles and Mamie kept him under control. Mamie brought another of her fantastic lemon pound cakes on Sunday and I got the 1st piece. What a treat. Thanks Mamie! It was great to see everyone again. This is one of the best matches in the country and I'll never miss it unless I'm physically unable to go. If that deer that ran into Glenn's car had come thru the passenger window they would have been visiting me in the hospital. Two feet farther back and it would have been a different story. The buck hit hard enough to break his back and I had to put him down. The target setters got a little extra tip with some fresh venison.

Ian did not have to be so good to me. After all he sold me the mold for my trapdoor. I never thought you could win a match without hitting a chicken. Score: chickens 20/ me 0 for the two day match. Ian, you had me beat fair and square by the rules and you did not have to cede the match winner to me but thanks.

Thanks to Jim and his wife and Doug and Steve and everyone else who had a hand in putting on a grand event.

Well, it was my first time at River Bend, and I certainly had a great time! (Though it was a little on the chilly side for tent camping.....)
I didn't get to know everyone, but it seems like a pretty good bunch of people that congregate there!

I got home just a little while ago. The wife and I stopped at Chattanooga to ride the Inclined Railway to the top of Lookout Mountain, and to spend a little time at the Chickamauga Battlefield Museum. It was time well spent.

John & I did the Chickamauga on the way down. We drove the 7mi loop (more, actually, since we got lost in the rain). Well done, but too wet to get out and see anything. Did enjoy the museum and gun collection. Going thru the gun collection with John was like having your own private tour guide. There weren't many (any?) that he is not conversant in.

Wow, wish I had my own personal tour guide! I was VERY impressed with my fairly brief walk-thru of the gun collection at Chickamauga, but am pretty low on the knowledge scale. Definitely will go back when I have more time!

Thanks guys. It really was a great match. For anybody that hasn’t been to the SE Regional I feel sorry for you. Jim Kidwell runs a good match.

I have always heard about southern hospitality but now I have experienced it. What I have heard is all true. The people at that match are the most polite bunch I have ever been around. I have never felt more welcome at any match I have ever been to. There were quite a few I already knew and I met a lot more. It is people like Charles Outler, Steve Hubbard, Doug Gazaway, Jim Kidwell, Gerald Parks, Woody and a whole slew of others that made this the most enjoyable match I have ever gone to. After staying with Charles and Mamie I need to borrow Charles’ fence stretcher to get my pants and shirt buttoned up.

Thanks again everybody, you have made my whole year!

PS: Thanks for the quarters Woody. 😁

Woody you shot well. You sure did a good job of distracting me from my spotting for Blair though. I think you did that intentionally just to get me in trouble. 😁

It didn't work. It was good to see you despite what the other shooters were saying under their breath. By the way, I had to take out a loan at usury rates to make it home after paying my debt to you off.
