Re: Dual diameter 40-82 revisited
DD,
I shoot the paper, steel critters, iron plates and yes snow banks and bowling pins and sometimes rocks, and if there was a refrigerator door or the whole thing down range for a target I would try to put holes through it also. There is no secret that I prefer the shoots like the Quigley, Montana 1000, Baker and Alliance.
If you think they are a cack walk, shoot them once and find out. There are some of the top shooters you will go against at the iron targets that come from all parts of this fine Country and Nations.
I shoot the matches as much as I can and I support them local and where ever my Gypsy Wagon will take me.

AND, how far are you from Ben Avery when you go to Wickenburg Kurt? There you can shoot BPTR off a bench in a match. Drive up to the firing point.
Google says about 1,200 miles my house to Alliance, won't even show my house to Baker, MT.
About 1,800 miles one way my house to Lodi. Forgot how far it is to Missoula or Sacramento, shot target at both.
998 my house to turn off at Byers. 207 to Ben Avery. Solid 11.5 hours to Raton.
I know, I know, Ben Avery took one look at you and showed you the door. You have to endeavor to persevere Kurt.
No hope for Semtav I am afraid, too bad seems like a pretty nice guy if just a tad sensitive. I guess spraying snow balls is fairly safe though. Haven't tried that either and it is not on my bucket list.

What was that saying---
"I won't go south for the winter until they pry that control stick from my cold frozen hands" ??
No, something about guns!!
Maybe:
" I won't go south for the winter until they pry that shotgun from my cold frozen hands"
Either way it works !!

I visit a friend that lives close to Mesa and shot at the Rio Salado and I catch I think 74 to 60 heading back up to Stanton and I stopped at Avery.desert deuce wrote: ↑Wed May 26, 2021 12:05 am AND, how far are you from Ben Avery when you go to Wickenburg Kurt? Nice range but so is the Rio salado.
But this is getting to far away from the .40-82 I'm interested in.......

Thanks Charlie, I presume that is where the Q is held?
Several folks have been prodding me to go to the Q because they say it is a fun gathering.
Doesn't look like I will make it this year though.
Besides, if Deadeye can't be there not much reason to show up.

Quigley is held in Forsyth, Mt. Which is 1489 miles from you, but 124 miles from Baker. Well worth the trip if Deadeye could be there for sure. Hope to be able to make it as I visited with Mr. Gullo awhile back and need to stop at his vendor booth.

Re: Dual diameter 40-82 revisited
Seeing if I can get this thread somewhere back on track, I got bored watching the wind howl so went out and tested the 8 lb paper.
Wind was 90*-120* at 20 mph gusting to 28 mph according the the NWS site a couple hundred yds away.
I put in 3 more minutes of windage ( not enough)
and added 3 minutes of elevation to get above my other shots.
But my point of impact wound up being approx 3 minutes lower than the last group ??
not sure what caused that.
wound up with 2 separate groups
every other shot went into a group
1-3-5 went low
2-4-6 went high
shooter or wind ??

Re: Dual diameter 40-82 revisited
The one thing I think that does show is the futility of chasing shots if one doesn't know the exact cause of the change. If I would have been adjusting the sights based on the last shots the groups would have been at least twice the size.

brian,
your bullets are penetrating those frig doors well
in aust we had a bushranger called ned kelley.
he had a blacksmith make him a set of body armour out of plow shares.
it was dented by lead bullets, but they had to shoot him in the legs and the nuts to bring him down.
frig doors would not have cut it for ned.

Look Bruce, I know you mean well........however, when you branch off from plinking refrigerators at land fills and transition over to shooting men below the waist you may be placing that viral grain in a weak mind that is obviously already on the decline. I must warn against it. I am sure Bush Rangers would agree.

Re: Dual diameter 40-82 revisited
With that said, in my humble opinion that load shows promise. It is time to apply it to paper targets at the distances you are proposing to shoot from.
Probably advantageous to chronograph the shots as you fire them. You may find the variation in distribution attributed to muzzle velocity spread. If not you have eliminated that variable. Next, perhaps shooting with the forend removed. Sometimes it can be as simple as the rear staff not returning to battery exactly for each shot. Eliminate one thing at a time.

Re: Dual diameter 40-82 revisited
Has anyone chronographed what just changing paper thickness does to MV?
DD, I dont think I can see holes in paper at 800 -900 or 1000 yds, so I'll probably stick to shooting something that makes bigger holes or splatters at those distances as long as Im doing this solo.
