Re: 38-50 Hepburn per Dan T
Thanks and I am very happy with the way it shot. Didn’t really know what to expect because I have spent time on stuff in practice only to have the wheels fall off completely at a match. The 3F looked good in practice and my only goal of going to that match was to test some different loads in match conditions and so that is exactly what I did. I will still tinker with the 3F. It does shoot good but needs a more detailed fouling control than what I have time for in a sillywet match but a target rifle match I could easily manage the fouling. . Might be a good option for 1000 yards which I will test in June with this rifle in Indiana. It is ALWAYS windy at Camp Atterbury so that should be a really really interesting test. I will probably just fire some rounds after a relay just to see if they will stay on paper and if they will I will just use it for the 50@ 1000 match in September. Or maybe I will just throw caution to the wind and bring it and only it for the LR match In June. I also tested the 1.5 in virgin and fire formed brass and I could not tell any difference between the 2 in my rifle which means I can go ahead and convert everything I have and get them all loaded ASAP.

Reducing the amount of powder can bring benefits. Rick Moritz told me he uses lots but my rifle is very comfortable and accurate using only 51 grains of 1 1/2 Swiss. This essentially is zero compression as the wad just gives the powder a kiss. Of course, I'm not shooting past the ram distance.

I am coming at this from a different angle than many others. I am completely HELL BENT on making this work with straight sided bore diameter paper patch bullets. I also want to do it with a groove diameter chamber, which is how my 45s are chambered. I am only seating the projectiles .080 into the case so I need to fill the case completely. Later I may try doing a groove diameter PP bullet for chickens but for now I will keep plugging away with these long bullets. I hope to shoot some into the swimming pool sometime this spring so that I may see how much the 15:1 alloy is upsettingcw50-70 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 1:13 pm Reducing the amount of powder can bring benefits. If you want to fill the case but use less powder, get some amaranth seed. Meters beautifully and can be used to compress the powder under it.

Ian,
I just hope my .38-50 Hepburn shoots as well as your's is with what little work you have had developing loads for it.
Good work.

Thank Kurt. This was the first time I had shot it when the temps were above freezing. I was going to wait for warmer weather to sit down and try to work up a load but maybe that’s already done.

163 rounds of what I think is the best 38-50 ammo I have made thus far. Ready for the match next weekend at Friendship Indiana. 64 grains of Swiss 1.5 for this load.

Ian,
Your new boxes are ready too. Wrapped in bubble wrap and in the pile of stuff that is growing.

Awesome Ian,
They look like a Company of troops standing in formation on the parade field.
My .38-50 Hep is not quite ready yet but I think it will be for Alma next month.
I just finished casting with the new mould and the weather is changing to the best this week.
Hold tight at Friendship. Waiting fore a report.
Kurt

Re: 38-50 Hepburn per Dan T
Twas windy over the weekend. It did seem to move my little bullets around a little more than I thought but still wasn’t anything terrible. Not much more than my 45 ,or that’s the way it seemed like to me anyways I made a bunch fundamental mistakes over the weekend. Not sure what my deal was but I was having an off weekend. 26 on Saturday and 28 on Sunday. I won’t shoot it at a match again until the fourth weekend of April. Over all I am still very pleased with the way it is progressing and it was shooting better than I did. . Now that the weather is starting to warm up I think I will start going through an actual load development. Plus I have my case extension some 381 and 375 wads to try and my bushing die came in so I can experiment with various amounts of mouth tension.
