I have a 26" std weight octagon barreled saddle rifle in 40-70 2.1" bn it weighs just under 10 lbs. It is a joy offhand. Off the sticks it works fine. I don't have std weight 45 to compare too but my original std rd barrel business rifle doesn't wave around like a flyswatter either. With only a 40 cal hole that saddle rifle std barrel is still plenty heavy. Heavy barrel guns have their place and utility so do bulls of various weights but most would be well served by std weight barrels for ordinary shooting and gongs. One only has to remember that the original Creedmoor and Long-range models had std profile barrels so the guns were under 10 lbs and competition legal.. in the past I have passed on a few used fairly plain Shilohs for sale that were std weight barrel 45-70's the next one might just come home with me...bobw
