Cody is running a 22 match today, which is where I should be, but helping my Dad feed at the ranch, just glad to still have him to hang with. Our 100 year anniversary was in 2018 when my grandfather homesteaded in the buck creek hills.

My mom’s side homestead is 20 miles north, from 1881.

Dads 40-82 is a silhouette and, it shoots a DDPP designed by Arnie, made by BACO, 86gr of 1.5F swiss, starline 45-90 cases. It shoots very well. Havent shot it past 500m yet but will this will this spring!!!

I just "acquired " Garys Borchardt in 40-82. Rifle wont show up til Quigley time but all the accessories arrived so im trying them out in my Browning. It came with a Baco 395415E, and i just ordered Bacos 403415E DD mould.
Has a 1-13 twist barrel so should be an interesting test.

Hey Brian, we didn't have too much luck with that 40-82. Just never could get any kind of consistent shooting out of it for some reason. Would think we finally had a load that would work and would get some good groups, then the next time we shot, it would go all to crap. Perhaps the most annoying thing was we had fits with cases separating. Not sure why as I have yet to have a 40-65 or 45-70 do that. I bought the package mostly to have a gun available to anyone wanting to get started in BPCR. It seems like we occasionally run into a fellow that is interested in shooting, but has no idea where to buy such a gun and doesn't want to wait years to get one. I sold it to such a guy and tried to help him get it going. We ended up giving up after a year or so of frustration and had it rebarrelled to 45-70. He is shooting fine now and enjoying himself. He also had a 22 barrel made for it and is one of our top shooters at our 22 matches. Greg Bybee is his name.

Two other comments, first fellow shooter and friend Michael Jackson has a 40-82 in a Wesson rifle put together by Crossnos. It is magnificent and shoots like a house a fire. The only thing wrong with it is he won't sell it to me! From that rifle, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 40-82 and it makes me want one for myself.

The other interesting thing is the 40-82 in question is a CPA rifle and I called them to see what they knew about it. Apparently a gun writer by the name of Dick Gunn (? I hope I remember that right) was instrumental in pushing Paul Shuttleworth into making making the CPA 44 1/2 Stevens rifles. Paul made an initial batch of 10 guns. This rifle is #9 in that initial batch and the one that Dick bought himself. No idea how it got to Wyoming, and as I remember it Dick ordered it in some other caliber. CPA said they were glad to know the whereabouts of that rifle.

I hope you have good luck with that Borchardt. I liked it as well.
Cody

Just couldn't stand it. Pretty gusty out today But..................
Since I've never shot bore dia PP before and had all these bullets Gary had made up, I just had to go give it a try in my Browning 40-82.
Top target was shot with bullets he had already patched. It was about .001 too loose for this gun but tried them anyway.
Top and bottom in black were sighters but the other 7 were one sight setting. Way to much vertical.

unpatched 10 bullets and repatched with thicker paper.

that bottom load would have been right at 1 moa if it wasn't for that flyer.
little more tweaking might just get me there.

Why, oh Why did I know that was coming. I almost predicted it word for word !!
But, If you study the red shaded area below closely, you'll see, there ain't no way in hell I'm giving up my Patches for that greasy kid stuff !! :D
There is a cause and effect for every flyer, one just has to find it.

so zack, what did you do wrong? bruce.
Truthfully Bruce, the big mistake was trying them in the first place.

At the time I was shooting quite well with the wonderful time tested grease groove bullets and when the DT Money came along I thought, for some insane reason, I should try paper patched bullets also. After wasting my time (it did not take long) trying to better the results on target with the money bullets I listened to the targets and switched back to the money bullets and here I am today, happy as a clam and shooting rather well with the money bullets. I guess in the final analysis it was the results on the target that mattered most when the results matter most as in competition.

See you at the range.

PS: I also got to look at the targets of other good shooters while they were using paper patched bullets.

Thanks Kurt and Grumpy.
I do think I have a little advantage over them shooting prone !!
DD has a point. I think it is easier to screw up a patch and turn a load bad, but if you pay attention to every shell as you load it, PP takes a back seat to nothing else.

Never having shot patched to bore before, i probably turned that 1 moa group into a DD gotcha with something i did.
