I guess I'm one of those hoarders. But for good reason after living through several previous shortages of reloading components. I don't feel bad about buying every brick of primers I could get my hands on between shortages, and as far as I know anyone else could have done the same if they didn't want to be caught short later? Don't hate those who lived through the shortages, and planned better because of that.

Will someone comment on shelf life of primers? I just bought at gun show a brick of Fed large pistol 150. The old black and red carton. Any idea what vintage these could be?

I am using primers from probably 30 years old or more.
No Problem as long as they have been kept cool and dry

"I’ve never gotten into reloading prior to now so I never had a chance to purchase all that is required at the 'Good Ole Days' pricing that you took advantage of."
-- Imontee

Back in the "Good Old Days" shooters complained about prices. I started reloading about 1970, became really involved about 1983 or so. Looking the back the prices then look almost unbelievable today. However, I don't know how many times when I was in the backroom of the now defunct Castro Valley Gun Shop or at Chabot Gun Club, that I heard shooters complain of high prices for ammunition, reloading components, and firearms and how much those prices increased since the 1950's/60's.

I just finished my last Allan Max fire primers forming .38-50 cases from .30-40 Krag. Allan I think closed their doors in Illinois back in the 60's , not sure, but all 90 I had left did not misfire.

I'm still using primers I've owned for 40 years and they all go bang. Not sure how others store theirs, and I think that could have some affect on whether they stay in good shape. Mine are in my gun room in a cool basement that's also dry. So a very good environment for primers and powder.

Holy Cow Charlie,

The last time I ordered GM's I got five bricks for $400. I just might be priced out of this sport before I'm ready to go. Tin is close to $40 a pound here now and lead, when you can find it, is way up also. When the news broke about Goex I bought all the O/E I could find but that was $33/lb. here (Canada) also. After saying all that I figure I've got enough of everything for about five years.   Hope I last that long.

I have quite a few 1960's primers that I inherited when my grandfather passed away. They work just fine. I still have several cans of smokeless from the same time. One can of IMR 4064 is the most accurate powder out of my wife's 7mm short mag and is only used in that rifle.

Paul, there's alot of things I don't do now that I used to.... :D . So I consider that money saved and put towards stocking up. Been buying 20:1 from BACO every 3 or 4 months. Sort of spreading it out. By doing so, I don't have to use up my own stash. When it gets really bad, I will start using that. CCI 250 primers are around $200 a brick on Gunbroker. Down about $150 from it's peak I believe. Haven't needed to buy any primers and doubt I will. But more than likely will at some point, just for a little insurance.

At the Indy 1500 gun show this past Friday, I picked up some #10 percussion caps for $120/1000. I also bought a pound of Unique for $45/lb. I would have bought some CCI BR2's had I found any. It seemed that $120/1000 was the going rate but many that I saw were old stock, not current production. The powder was the first Unique I have seen, and I am still a little on the short side.

BTW, this gun show finishes today, if any here are close enough and in need.

Local gun store going out of business 20 or so years ago had a rack of primers. Every week they dropped the price. All the lg rifle I bought are gone except for a box of magnums.

The price got down to $3.00 a brick and I bought nearly 15,000 CCI small rifle just before they closed. I do still have over 10,000 of those

Did the same in Lakewood, Co about the same time. Shot the last of them a couple of years ago.
