This rifle still has a bright bore, and a tight chamber like I use in my rifles, the twist is 1-19 3/4"

I got all the documention with it, original letters to sharps when he ordered the gun, his drawing of the no. of cross hairs he wanted in the scope, also the page he tore out of his record book and sent to sharps of a target he shot at 1000 yards, it is around a 15 inch group. It is neat to looks at that group and realize each dot on the target was put there with his lead pencil. The there are also letters form the people who own the sharps records.
Speaking of 1000 yards he shot that with the scope and the mounts you see on the gun, there is only about an inch or so of elevation in that rear mount, and the extra cross hairs, there is much to learn about the scope and how it was used. The optics are still bright and clear and I think about 20 power.
There is other letters to sharps about different guns as this gun was blackballed from shooting in the local shooting clubs as he cleaned house every time he shot.
He shot 105 grains of powder and a 520 grain bullet patched, he order the 520 bullets from sharps so they would have been sharp's alloy, he also order a complete set of loading tools.

Thanks a bunch Orville----i really appreciate it.

I keep looking at originals as they show up around houston-------------this area tends to push the upper limits of price for really nice pieces

Perhaps one day i'll find one i just can't live without-----meanwhile i'll have fun with my Shiloh.

Looking foreward to a range report when you get the scope thing figured out

Again thanks

Dave

Orville, I think you could get your money back on the gun and still keep the gun by charging a handling fee and xtra if they drool anywhere near it. Load up some ammo and let her talk what a beauty. Ought to be able to get the first bucks from Stephen with KW pushing and shoving to get to the frt of the line. Again great score and congrats . bobw

It is a 45 2 7/8", I haven't slugged the bore yet to see how it runs as compaired to todays bore and groove, it does have a very shallow lead at least 7 degrees.

That's good. Dont be surprised if the lead is between 3 and 4 degrees.
Looking forward to put my patties on it :D

Orivlle, have you done a chamber cast?

Might be a good one to use for pattern to make a new reamer for PP bullets.

I have not had a chance to make a chamber case yet, I found out what I want to know useing a case which chambers in the current 45 2 7/8s, and will not go in the chamber I have in my copy of the tollofson gun, not in another original sharps, or the tollofson gun, the chamber in the original guns are almost identical to my current reamer (chamber).
Makeing a reamer based on a chamber cast from an original gun IMO, is a waste of time unless the bore and groove of the original gun matches the bore and groove of the new barrel.

That is a very cool rifle and scope and I love the scroll work around the ends of the scope. Knowing the history makes the whole situation that much better. What year did it go out?
