Yesterday I sat drinking my morning coffe and scanning the hillside across from my house for critters as usual. There were 9 mulies on the hill and acting nervous.... The whities are always nervous so I never pay any attention to them. As I looked a little more to the west I saw something sitting in a snow bank and assumed a coyote. The glasses proved it to be a bob cat just sitting there like a dog on the hill. I watched him for sveral mintues and since he was just sitting there, I decided he might sit a little longer. After opening the safe and digging out the 222 Rem and then pawing around for shells, I finally got the right combination. I grabbed the range finder which had been sitting in the window sill and headed out. I ranged him at 214, leaned over the windshield of the truck and put one on him.

Oddly, this morning there was another one right across from the house at about 100 yds. He got into the brush before I was even out of the house and the gun and shells were still sitting by the back door this time!!

They're pretty hard to find in the day time, but I've probably seen 6-8 in the last 10 yrs. I've also seen around 10 cougars but never in season and when I had a gun. I've cut a lot of tracks over the years but rarely see the cats. My neighbor actually sees them regularly. He lives on a creek and it seems to be a path the cats use. My hunting partner trapped 2 in his yard last year.

I think the last bob cat was heading into the thicket where my quail hang out. I did have near 50 quail feeding in the corn I scattered this morning. It was down to 14 degrees with a fair snow cover and I think they were in need of some help to keep them in good shape this winter. The cold spell is supposed to break this weekend. They should do OK without much help after that. I do throw some corn out when it's really cold or snow on the ground.

That's a really nice bobcat w/ lots of spots in the belly area and the insides of the legs; not quite full prime, but good enough. Pelt prices last year were quite good, and that could easily be a $200.00 or more bobcat pelt; stretched, dried, and delivered.

This may show the color better. There was a pretty fair amount of reddish color along the lower body. The hides been sent out to get tanned.
