.458 Winchester, .458 Lott, and .460 Weatherby Magnums

Post by rjohns »

If you had either the .458 Winchester, .458 Lott, ot .460 Weatherby Magnums, and you loaded them with black powder, you would get a 45-95, 45-125, and about a 45-140 respectivly. Would it work? I was asked this at work, and answered I do not know, and would not try it. I looked in the reloading manuals, and the Lott and .458 Winchesters are not that different from the 45's. Considering many of these rifles have 26" barrels, are either single shot or bolt action, and obviously strong enough, would it work? The twist is listed as 1/16 or 1/14, and most likely would foul out quickly because of shallow grooves(?), but I had to ask. Again, I am not going to try it, it just got me thinking if it was possible.

We are shooting a Ruger #1 .45-165-570 (.460 Weatherby) with excellent results. Fouling has not been a problem. Old data is packed away so don't have velocities right at hand.
