Lever Spring Adjustment

What is the best method of adjusting the lever spring fit on an 1874? My rifle is a transitional model with a #1 heavy octagon barrel. The replacement spring holds the lever open too far, holding the extractor back. In order to chamber a round, I have to hold the lever back a bit to relieve pressure on the extractor.

You sure you have the 'rite' spring?
Did you get it from Shiloh??
Shiloh has different lever springs for heavy and std dia bbls.

Lumpy, I think so. It matched the broken one pretty well. This is just an adjustment issue. Soon as Kirk smarts me up on this it will all be fine.

Have to say, the old spring held out pretty well. The receiver has a Big Timber address but it pre-dates the B prefixes. It's wore out at least two owners already.

Get 2 of the springs, then you'll be set forever.
Might want to check into a spare firing pin or 2 also.

OK, got Kirk on the fernsprecher and he recommended moving the spring in or out in the mounting slot as the first thing to try. If that didn't work sufficiently, then file on the cam surface. It appears that the new spring now functions acceptably after repositioning. Kudos to Kirk for taking the time to help me personally.

Lumpy, if I break the firing pin on this one bad enough it can't be repaired it will be time for a new breech block and lever. The firing pin on this one has springs on both sides and there are none of those to be had. It also has the old style non-roller lever. But, I got two lever springs and a complete set of springs for spares so I may have a lifetime supply now.
