Lyman data for 45-90
This question might be sacrilegious, is the load data listed in Lyman 48 for the 45-90 safe to use on our Shiloh actions?

Just stick with black powder like the 45-90 was meant for, i'm not a big fan of Lyman information, seen too many mis-haps in the last 25 years!!
If you like shooting smokeless, get yourself a 45-70, there is great load data out there for this caliber, and no one will get hurt like what has happened at the Quigley shoot the last couple years!!

Kirks advice is sound! I would listen to him!
With these large capacity Sharps cartridge cases smokeless powder is not the powder to use. Oh I know I heard this many times " hey I been doing this for many years with out problems". I stood along side of one that blew, it was not a pretty sight. Unfortunately people just wont listen and keep using it.

Re: Lyman data for 45-90
Thanks for the direct reply. I have been using black since I started shooting the rifle, but a fellow always wonders if there is a magic load out there that will shoot better than what he has now. I got no complaints and again want to say thanks.

Never actually seen one blow but I have seen the after effects. I have seen other smokeless guns blow and it aint pretty. I did see the results of this years Quigly from one that did. As for me Shiloh says use Black except you can use smokeless in the 45-70. All my other guns including my 45-70 has ever only ever seen black and all with good results. Listen to the manufactures advice.

Re: Lyman data for 45-90
I prefer single shot rifles and in particular the Sharps action. I have a bunch of Shiloh's in 45-70, 45-90, 50-90 and a couple percussion models as well that I shoot bp in. I have a 30-40 Shiloh Hartford model that I got in particular because I wanted to shoot smokeless in it. I really like the 30-40 round and I really like the Sharps action, it might not be historically acturate but it sure is a nice combo.
