Need Help with a Trapdoor

Post by omgb »

OK, you folks are my "go-to" for help with my Sharps. So, I figured maybe you could point me in the right direction with my Trapdoor. A couple of years back, I saw a really mint, H&R Officer's model for sale at a very good price. I picked it up and soon discovered why it looked so minty. It tends to open the action cover after a shot or two and in the process, eject the spent case. Very disturbing to say the least. Well, a little research shows that this was a very common fault of the H&R rifles as they modified the trapdoor design slightly for lower manufacturing costs. The result is an unsafe condition. Lots of fixes are shown on the internet, some sketchy, some highly involved. I want to find a gunsmith who knows trapdoors and can do the work required to make it safe. Whom do you recommend? I can't seem to find anyone.
Thank you,

My best suggestion would be to ask over on the assra board, https://forum.assra.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl
Those guys over there are pretty helpful. The subject of your issues with the H&R have been talked about a lot on there and am very sure someone there can point you in the right direction to get the help you need.

I have an H&R Officer's Model Trapdoor. Mine did not self-eject, but I still had John Taylor, Taylor Hachine, do his action alteration so it would happen.

As an aside, I had John do work on original Sharps-Borchardt M1878, a Cody-made Ballard #5 Pacific, and my Shiloh M1874. he does quality work and knows his onions 'bout single shot rifles.

I don’t believe Shiloh makes a trapdoor. Why as for help here?
