Great replies! My friend Tony raised the issue about brass with the 40-70 and then said I could consider using 405 Win brass and just having the chamber cut for it instead of trimming .060” off each piece. My other bud Johnny just ordered a CPA in 40-70 as well.

This really seems like a fun project with a couple different ways a guy could go…

40-65 can be very good at 800yd, I believe there is still a record at the club that will most likely never be beat. I dont have one yet but have seen them shoot very well. I have shot a 40-82 Silhouette at 1k, was it the best no, but it did ok. Wind was its enemy. If you plan to PP that cartridge, be VERY mindful of fouling! we get 90gr in there and down a 40cal hole fouling gets thick. Im now working on a 40-70SS PP, it looks like 78- 80gr will fit in there pretty easy. 14.5 twist will be very nice! a 16 can do it but your bullets get even lighter then. If I remember 14.3 twist was perfect??

If Mr. Seitz sees this maybe he can let you know about the 38's. Ive watched him shoot a 38-50 at 1k, He does very well out to 600 from what I see.

If you plan on a 40-82....Id buy brass NOW, from what starline said they wont make a run til next year...maybe.

As far as I know, the supply of .405 Hornady brass dried up several years ago. My advice is not to have a rifle chambered for that brass unless you have 250-300 pieces of brass in hand...

I really like the .40-70 SS and have a Rolling Block chambered for the .405 brass. I have a lifetime supply of brass.

Clarence makes a very good point, and it extends well beyond the 40-70. These days if you don't have the brass for something probably best to pass on it. And it goes well beyond just the bpcr.

Got an email back from Lucinda and she says she’s got January through May 2021 orders in a production group right now. So my 45-100 is getting closer! Lots to think about…

If you're shooting a 45-70, you already have 40-65 brass. Just buy dies and resize it.

When everything is considered, I think the .40-65 Win. would be my choice. A very easy cartridge to load for, easy to find affordable brass for, and plenty good for long range or silhouette matches.
I have three in .40-65W and 6 in .40-70SS and I like both cartridges. Since I have purchased more .405 Win. brass than I'll ever need the .40-70 is my favorite, but now that brass is impossible to find I'd never recommend it to anyone buying, or barreling a rifle.

40-82 is easily made from 45-90....and starline just made a run. you get a bit more powder 70+gr. Dads gets 80gr with a DDPP
