I have a Farmingdale 1863 that I would like to know if the cartridge shearing plate/gas plate (Not sure what it is called) is supposed to be removed from the breach block for cleaning? If so, what is the best way to do so? Up to now I have been using an assortment of small brushes, pipe cleaners and Q-tips to work behind this plate.

Yes, it needs removed along with the clean out screw. There is two little slots on each side, use two screw drivers and twist, hopefully it comes out.
Depending how long it's been in there you may want to soak it with PB blaster.
