Not only a marvelous shot, Dr. Keith Lay is also one of the very finest gentleman anyone could ever hope to meet. Thank you for putting the pictrures of his newest Shiloh up for us to enjoy.

Money Gun!

Post by RMulhern »

Yep! That's one of my FAVORITE LOADS out of my .45/70; the other is 78 grs. of the same powder using a Postell bullet with a reduced front drive band to bore diameter! The only 'White Lightning' I got....is FAMOUS GROUSE presently but I intend to find a 'bait' of it to try!!

Good lookin rifle thar Doc!! Does the 'Missus' have anything to say.....bout you taking it to bed wif ya?????

Doc/ Dan,
A very fine looking & performing rifle! Thanks for the photo's.
I'm glad to see some "rediscovering" the plain ole .45-70 for long range shooting!
Look forward to seeing you guys in March in AZ- sounds like it will be a great time ....Dennis

The wood is beautiful looks like it should be on an expensive violin.
Engraving is beautifully tasteful and rich.
17 Shots a great test of a shooter's nerve and confidence in keeping a constant bore condition.
Did he wipe or blowtube?

Best to all

Ed, that group was shot with wiping twice between shots. The group was shot @ 200 meters instead of yards and the fouler is not pictured-it's just off the top left of the picture. The next two shots are the ones to the left out of the main group and after this the rifle grouped great. There was not much wind or mirage to speak of but the light on the target went from bright sunlight to deep shadow as the group was shot late yesterday afternoon as the sun was going down. The last two shots are the two at the top of the group that were shot in the shadows-an interesting lesson on apparent image. I can get by with wiping twice between shots during BP Target shoots but run into a bit of a time issue during a silhouette match wiping X2. Fortunetly the gun shoots darn good with wiping X 1 too. I haven't tried HDPE yet. Thanks go out to DanT for getting the pictures and some sage advice as usual. This is the rifle that I won the Ken Hurst engraving package on a couple of years ago with the Stuart Chaffin fund drive that Barvid got going to help defray some medical costs for his newborn son(who is doing quite well I understand).

TAZ: very impressive rifle & even more impressive shot group. Must also be nice to have the eye sight to use iron sights.

As for the charge of 75 grains, seems to me that for this powder am't., a drop tube is mandatory. So my query is do you slowly pour this whole am't. in all @ once? Or, a partial pour, then compress, followed by the rest w/ more compression? Or what??

Also curious as to the bullet dia.-vis-a-vis bore dia.

Dan T.,

Perhaps I missed it somewhere, but could you elaborate some on what constitutes a match chamber in Doc Lay's Shiloh? I think I have a good idea of what that means, but an engineers explanation would be a help; biologists (at least the sledge hammer types) don't design tools they just use them.

I do believe the wood on my Shiloh has been topped.
That is one sweet shooter Doc has there.
