40-82 Win 1886 case inside neck reaming Dia.

Post by IndianaCat »

Hello. My 1st attempt at resurrecting a model 1886 in 40-82. The bore of this 1895 vintage runs .408" dia. so am looking at using a .409" dia. bullet. I am full length sizing 45 2.4" brass in Redding 40-82 die. With the larger diameter (.409") bullet seated, the cartridge neck in front of the bottleneck swells precluding chambering. The Mike Venturino book "Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West", references inside neck reaming to alleviate the issue. I would take it that the neck reaming would occur after the full length resize to remove material at that point. Any rule of thumb on a ream diameter, as will have to get with Wilson on custom ground inside neck reamer size? Appreciate any input and past experience on 40-82 case forming. Thanks.

In the interest of maintaining concentricity, I prefer to turn the outside of the case, after inserting a mandrel on the inside. Some case trimmers can fitted to do this. Another advantage of guaranteed concentricity is that the case can then have an Internal shoulder to seat the bullet against, eliminating neck sizing.

I've had Forster make several custom size neck reamers for use in the Forster trimmer. They work great.

I use a K&M neck reamer. It's a hand operation, but does a good job to thin case necks when forming brass down to smaller neck diameters. And other than various pilots, it will do a large variety of neck sizes without a separate reamer. And I prefer turning down the outside of case necks myself.
