What is "accurate"?
I wonder what sort of 10-shot group a gun like that can shoot on a good day?
I should pencil out what a "rifleman's" MOA is at 37 miles.

Heck the "Paris Gun" could hit the city of the same name from 76 miles. I wonder what that is as a MOA? The Germans were doing it in WWI.

The Navy is still king though they could send an 1800 lb 16" shell 22miles and hit what they had as co-orrd's within 2-3 yrds.

Did you ever hear of the Babylon guns Iraq contracted for in about 1990. Baby Babylon with a segmented barrel of 150 feet and was supposed to heave a shell about 500 miles. It was tested in the horizontal with a lead shell and actually worked. Big Babylon was all but eight sections shy of finished when customs got wind of it and stopped the final shipments from England of all places.
The big gun was to be mounted on a hill side at a 45 degree angle and was not aim-able. They were supposedly working on shells that could be directed in flight after firing.
The plans called for a shell of one meter in diameter.

back in Danang in 69, we could hear a train running in the air. It was the 16 inch shell from the New Jersey. then we could hear the WOMP of the shell hitting. then we could hear, if we listened, the BOOM of the gun going off. 20 miles off shore.
the sound came last....
Thanks Navy!

Ken,
I was a gunner on the Battleship New Jersey in Nam glad we could help. Our max range was 26+ miles with the 1,900 lb.shells 23 knot miles in Navy terms.
I don't know what the range for the 2,700 lb.AP shells was since there was'nt any thing that needed much punch. Anyway glad that we helped.

The Navy has a large stockpile of those 16 inch shells at Crane NAD, Indiana. I heard that they are interested in finding someone to demil them.

In regard to the Babylon gun, Frederick Forsythe wrote a book called "The fist of God" and he talks about that very gun. A great read.

The rail guns look to be the artillery of the future. The Navy is pretty interested in them as it takes a ship to carry the generators needed for the electricity to make them work. Small shell and hyper velocity is what does the damage.

Re: Artillery, The King of Battle
They might not want to be in a hurry to get rid of them as when i was a volunteer on the Iowa on the last weekend it was in Richmond CA before it went down to the LA area one of the volunteer supervisors told me that they were not allowed to convert the ship to full museum status as the Navy still owned it and one other of the Iowa class sort of in reserve status for the Marine Corp they wanted two until 2020 or after incase they needed them for off shore bombardment. The only part of the ship they could change was cutting off the tables in the aft mess. All the ships records complete from launch was kept in a special records room on the ship under lock and key it was the temp office for the referb group.Woody wrote:The Navy has a large stockpile of those 16 inch shells at Crane NAD, Indiana. That was Mothers Day weekend and they did a big open house for the general public my friend and I was manning the brow for welcome aboard to the folks and answering questions.
Some of the volunteers were there to keep the ships systems in shape: engines, boilers, anchor room stuff etc. even the main guns and the five inchers basically the ship was supposed to able to get under way in 72hrs?

I should pencil out what a "rifleman's" MOA is at 37 miles.
If my math skills are correct tonight, 1 MOA at 37 miles would be about 56.82 feet...
Showing my work like a good student......(mostly Rounded to 2 decimal places)
1 MOA = 1.047" at 100 yards
1 MOA = 0.01047" at 1 yard
1 mile = 1760 yards
1760 yards x 37 miles = 65120 yards
65120 yards x 0.01047 = 681.81"
681.81" / 12" per foot = 56.82 feet
Therefore: 1 MOA @ 37 miles = 56.82 feet (or 18.94 Yards)
