Gussy I don't have any problem at all with inconsistencies in the readings. I read and followed the instructions very carefully and found it quite easy to do. I'm actually amazed at how easy it is to get consistent readings.

I don't care much that the readings are quite a bit lower than what the chart says as I'm only interested in relative hardness comparisons.

I'm very happy with the device..

Never tried that. The only problem would be with pure lead. It's the hardest thing to get a good test on. The chart would be off but most people go for consistency. Find an alloy that works and keep mixing to that reading.
