Elk Hunting Twofer

Post by Kirk Stovall »

Elk numbers have been healthy once you get away from the wolves. This year is no different, we were able to find a good bunch of cows and a couple bulls. The bulls were not trophy sized, so I let them get bigger and shot a couple cows, I had my sons and grand daughters along for fun. They say you can't eat horns and they are right...

Wonderful! Those grand daughters will remember being on the hunt with their grandpa the rest of their lives.

Nice couple of cow elk Kirk. What are the chronic wasting concerns in Montana?

CWD is always a concern, but it isn’t catastrophic yet. Sometimes the appearance of problems is greater than the actual problem itself. It is also odd, how people perceive various concerns with fear or complacency.

Whirling disease was the biggest problem with the Madison river several years ago, and although there was a threat from the disease, I think they found out that other conditions contributed to the decline in fish numbers as much as Whirling disease itself.

Then you have the wolves in Yellowstone and they will tell you that the declining elk population isn’t a result of the wolf reintroduction, and how they can skew the numbers backward from that, I can’t understand.

I haven’t seen the alarm about CWD in western Montana yet, but there has been evidence that it may have shown up in a few areas...

I hunt deer and elk in NW Montana but had heard of CWD concerns in the SE part of Montana. Nice couple of cow elk; they really are the best eating!

The photographic evidence is very enlightening.
Sometimes you get the chicken, and sometimes you get the feathers!
