PP ring
my Shiloh 40 70 SS is shooting fine, but. two things happen
VERY seldom, but they do happen.
1. I sometimes get a paper ring out the breach after firing. I use a 40 factory die to tighten the shell around the hand seated PP bullet.
I do this by feel and VERY slightly to hold the PP bullet in the case.
2. I have had some cases split 2/3 down the length from the top. all in the same spot.
not many, and not often...maybe 5 in two hundred rounds. I checked the length and found some had stretched.
they were 2.51 and not the 2.49 that I trim them to. I trimmed these back.
they are all trimmed to just slightly under the 2.5 length. 2.495 or so.
the cases are 30 40 Craig, and are cleaned, and checked for length regularly.
I also anneal them , twice a year or so.
any thoughts? thanks..Ken

Re: PP ring
this shell happened today.
it is under the 2.5 of the 40 70 SS, so no size problem.
This has gone through at least 20 firings without problem.

Re: PP ring
slightly greasy cases after being cleaned and reloaded. Or, some sort of lubricant (or water) in your chamber.

Re: PP ring
THIS-
Do you dry 'mop' the chamber after you wipe the bore.

Re: PP ring
Would that be a roll crimp die, taper crimp die, FL sizing die?

Re: PP ring
I have not had the split cases but I use starline for PP. I've had the ring but Kirk told me not to worry it wouldn't affect anything. It happens when your case is a bit short in a standard chamber.

Re: PP ring
all good thoughts, but.
I dry mop the chamber after each shot. one wet one dry and dry mop.
no oil at all on shells. tumbled cleaned and dry before loading.
gun is a year old Shiloh 40 70 SS. so head space will not be a problem
cases were bought used a year ago, and they are 30 40 Craig based. all look really good.
I'll concentrate on making sure the chamber is really dry....
The die is a Taper Crimp and used very lightly NO crimp die at all.
and what about the PP 'ring' that shows some times?
???? thanks...Ken

Re: PP ring
The pp ring is probably always there, but usually blows out the barrel so you don't see it. Not a big worry.
On your broken case, if you run the point of a needle up the inside of the case, does it catch on a really small lip on the inside of the case mouth? It will take a needle to feel it, you won't necessarily see it.

Re: PP ring
have you done a chamber cast to see exactly what length you chamber is?? to get rid of a paper ring you need to run cases as long as you can (I.E. I have a 45-100 2.6 and all my cases are at 2.598) I wouldn't go by the book for trim length, it only causes problems in PP rounds.

Re: PP ring
I don't care what the greaser shooters do. I never trim any case that short, after initial sizing to fireform I never full length resize again. tighten the neck to hold a ppb and that is it. Regular chamfer on the outside VLD chamfer on the inside. You asked. bobw

Re: PP ring
Kenny,
maybe this old post will give you some encouraging thoughts.

I would suggest a thorough internal inspection of your inventory of cases, looking for a thin spot where they have been known to crack.
thanks for the help on my 40-65 BTW. I just need some range time to finish my fireforming.

Re: PP ring
thank's all....good advice.
It just could be that the cases are getting old....I'll watch the chamber drying and also not cut them so low next time.
I just annealed the bunch and they look good..

Are you resizing these cases?
How clean is the inside of the case?

Re: PP ring
Kenny,
What is the rim thickness of those cases?
What is the rim recess in the chamber?
