Scope stand
Ok I finally got a good spotting scope for silhouette and now I need a stand. I see some people use a survey tripod. I’m sure my scope will not attach to it, is there something else I would need to purchase to make the scope attach to the tripod?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Re: Scope stand
Just get a good quality tripod like a medium sized Manfrotto and a good pan head on it. Survey tripods are heavy bastards to move around. At least the ones I've seen

Re: Scope stand
I am sure you will get a lot of suggestions but here is what I recently bought. Manfrotto has a great reputation and was recommended to me by several "shooters." They have several models to choose from.

This tripod was also highly recommended but when I tried to order it from BACO, it was out of stock.

Re: Scope stand
I figured that it being heavy would help the stabilization of those Kansas winds.

Re: Scope stand
I have seen spotting scopes blow over even with the use of heavy tripods.
I tape nine 1/2 pound lead bars around each leg of my tripod.
Yes it is heavy but it takes out vibrations from the wind and my scope's center of balance means it will never blow over.

Re: Scope stand
Weight isn't necessary but having solid bracing is, as is solid vs telescoping legs. Telescoping legs add a flex point. Poor brace design placed to high doesn't give support to the right area. Long center pole and low bracing limits vibration best as does a wide stance.

I can guarantee that if the wind is heavy enough to blow over one of Brad Rice's scope stands, nobody wants to be on the range. I like mine that Brad made for me and I don't want anything else.

Re: Scope stand
Agree 1000 percent with Cody. I asked Brad make me one of his scope stands the day he brought his to Watkins for a match years ago Yes, it is heavy, I park close, but it has never gone over in any wind, Wyoming winds or those Raton blows that send everything blowing down range. Spend the money for a quality scope stand or replace a scope worth 5 times what the stand costs. No brainer.

Re: Scope stand
I bought one of Brad's scope stands about 15 years ago. I did "lighten" it by replacing the steel legs with oak. It does not vibrate in the wind and as Cody stated,

Re: Scope stand
You can, however, be successful and have fun in BPCR with a lighter scope stand and not even ruin your scope. Here are a few used ones.

Re: Scope stand
I have used a Cabin Tree for several years now and I have a very heavy 100mm scope on it and it is very solid and steady in the wind it has only fallen over once and that was when my Gypsy Wagon backed into it and rolled over one leg

Re: Scope stand
I have been very pleased with my Cabin Tree tripod. Has held my heavy Celestron scope very well in our desert winds.jackrabbit wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 2:59 pm I can guarantee that if the wind is heavy enough to blow over one of Brad Rice's scope stands, nobody wants to be on the range. Does anyone have a link to Brad Rice?
Or pictures of his tripods?
