1875 Auctioned

Post by SFogler »

Did anyone notice the 1875 Sharps repro auctioned on Proxibid today for $9500? (plus 19.5% fee) and a broken hammer spring.
Pretty good copy but no mention of who made it. Does anyone know? The original went for over $201,000 on Julia in 2014.

Damn! That is a rifle I would love to have owned. But I couldn't pay that for it. Beautiful rifle. I wonder if that was made by the guy out east that made beautiful 78s with Neidner triggers and 77s and other rifles? I have forgotten his name, Joe L. is about all I recall, but he made beautiful stuff.

Wow! What a rifle! Thanks for posting this.

By the way, isn't that an 1875, not an 1869?

The two existing '75 originals in Seller's book look nothing like the CSharps '75.

Sfogler, The single shot rifles and a few others in the auction were from the collection of the late Dave Garman. He and Dan Boardman operated Arcadia Machine and Tool company and in the 1970's produced the 1874 Sharps rifles labeled AMT. They always said they were ten years to early.

Wow!!.

For those of you that like the percussion rifles, there will be one coming this year at Cowan's in Cincinnati. Wonderful condition three band New Model 1859. Never messed with. Wish I had the funds to bid. I was at Cowan's on Tuesday picking up a Scott and Son double that needs some TLC and saw it. They told me that it should be in the May auction.

Woody,
Was that a W&C Scott&Sons double? Shotgun or double rifle?

14 gauge. Surprised I got it. The nipples are frozen and mangled and the loading rod is a poor replacement but otherwise still pretty strong. Should be a nice upland gun once it's cleaned up.

I asked the auction company, "Who made the repro Sharps 1875 (not 1869)" and they sent this response:
"pretty certain this in NOT a repro. There are no other marking. Likely the engraving on sides IS done at a later date. The hammer spring appears to be either broken, missing or unattached. Thanks" I hope whoever bought it knew what they were, or were not, getting!
If C Sharps made them like the surviving original (like this one) I bet they'd sell more. I bid on it early on, but was way way out bid.

Probably just me, but that "big washer" look ruins the whole gun.

That is a thing of beauty! Can’t believe the estimate was only $1,200 to $1,800, seems REALLY low (and it was)

Is it just me or does the muzzle flat look really rough? Looks like it was ground on 40 grit sandpaper. Maybe it was just the quality of the photo.

Looks like it would have been fairly light, pretty slender at the muzzle.

I would love to own it, no question.
