Gun Show Find Winchester Low Wall 22 Long

Post by Kirk Stovall »

The Livingston gun show is this weekend, I went early Friday with a couple friends and when I got there, I was told about a Winchester low wall that was stamped "W.F. Sheard, Livingston, Montana." I looked at it and it is an original half round half octagon in 22 Long. Not many of those around and the bore is shiney, so I bought it. Gophers are only a month away from seeing the wrong end of the Winchester...

Wow, impressive find! I love all things High or Low wall. Usually the bore are corroded on these early 22's. What year was it made?
If you have the serial I have a Winchester Red book of manufacture dates in case you don't.

I was made in 1893. It is unusual to find any 22 rimfire of that era with anything resembling a good bore. I got luck and found 2 with the Low wall and the 1873...

I have already poked some holes in Venturino's target board. It shoots fine. I just ordered a tool to put hollow points in the bullets, I will be giving that a try once I get that die. It sounds like the die also makes the bullet more true for the bore diameter and should even help accuracy...

Thanks-
How hard is it for you to find .22L ammo?
About all I see anymore is .22 S & LR along with .22Mag.

it is hard to find and when you do, it is expensive. I look for it at gun shows...

Mr. Stovall has a definite gift finding these gems.

Excellent pictures too.

This is my typical "find".

That must have been what the good guys shot in those old westerns. Looks to be about a 42 shooter.

Only Gun that kept wanting to follow me home from the Billings Gun Show was an original Sharps 40-50. Fortunately I was a little short on pocket change.
Did look like an interesting cartridge tho. Would be a fun one to shoot.

I did an upgrade on this rifle and put a Lyman tang peep on it. I also found a Sheard marked front sight and put on it. It is looking good and ready for gophers...

Went to a gun show in Pendleton, OR. Only saw one single shot Ruger #1. Not a single thing worth looking at.

I was at the wrong show  :( :(
