2 fg or 1 1/2 fg
OK, just for the heck of it.....
I've been using 1 1/2 OE in my 40 70 SS and have started trying 2 f OE
any thoughts? I've noticed no difference in residue. both have to be cleaned between shots.
I'm compressing 1/8 with a 65 grain load. BA custom 400 grain reduced front band GG cast 1/16
would you compress 2 f more or less than 1 1/2 ?.
thanks...Ken

the Black Powder Cartridge News -2009 Fall - "Some Black Powder Compression Data" article by Bob Woodfill:
Caliber - 45-70
Lyman 457124
Constant volume of FFg powder used
Compression tested: 0" - 1/8" - 1/4" - 3/8" and 1/2"
Best 3 Shot Groups 100yds ... 5 shot groups were tested also, with the same compression values except for Goex (1/4") and Schuetzen (1/2")
Goex - 0.62" with 1/8" compression
Goex Express - 0.26" with 1/4" compression
Schuetzen - 0.61" with 1/4" compression
Swiss - 0.56" with 1/2" compression
KIK - 0.65" with 0" compression
Compressing the powder little will make it burn cleaner
Goex likes to be compressed but Swiss doesn't
Compress the powder about 1/16" to 1/14"

You will never know for sure by asking here.
No way around it..... You just have to give it a try and see how it works in your combination of components and rifle.

Re: 2 fg or 1 1/2 fg
Is this saying that Swiss compressed 1/2" shoots .56" groups at 100 yards? If so that compression is more than the other powders for the best group. Why do they say Swiss doesn't like compression?Best 3 Shot Groups 100yds ... 5 shot groups were tested also, with the same compression values except for Goex (1/4") and Schuetzen (1/2")

Swiss can work extremely well when compressed. It can also work extremely well with little or no compression.
I read that particular article. There is no where near enough data to draw the conclusions that were reached IMO.
Chris.

In my .45-70 and .45-90 loads. I'm compressing around .350 using 'E' 2-F, with a PJ C'moor GG bullet.
The target told me to keep do'n it this way.

Surely Gussy, as long as you have been shooting you should be fluent in TalkieTargetia.
It is visually communicated by noting the location of the bullet holes and their proximity to one another
AND is some cases, their lack of appearance on the face of the target.

Sometimes my targets talk in Mumbo-Jumbo...
And sometimes they talk disparagingly...
But everyonce in awhile they smile at me.

I tell you what I hate and that is a lying target! That rascal will tell you that is the best load you will ever have. You leave and go home smiling and return 3 days later to do it again and admire what you have accomplished. But, OH NO, not this time, not again, don't work, won't shoot, not worth a flip! That lying rascal got me.
Normal isn't coming back, but Jesus is.
