The originals are really nice guns. But they came with two types of aperture rear sights. One rides on the bolt and has a habit of shooting loose. The other was a receiver side mount and more reliable. The cartridge is more than adequate for anything.

I have an original Deluxe model made in 1956. I bought it from Bill Goodman about eight years ago. It is beautiful and was advertised in 95% condition.I paid 2000 bucks for it. It is like a more powerful version of the 30-30. Barnes makes bullets for it as does Swift from time to time (A-frame). I also have an RCBS bullet mould. Make sure you can find brass. I have a bunch of Winchester as well as Jamison brass. I like the gun a lot but it does kick. You don't notice it when hunting, only at the bench. It works great on deer and elk to 200 yards. I suppose it would work on bear as well. A classic grown up version of the 1986 Winchester. I added an original Lyman receiver side mount peep which helps my 62 year old eyes.

Would rather have the parent Model 1886 in one of our black powder cartridges. But if you can't see yourself with a 86, then a 71 is almost the next best thing.

Winchester's last iteration of the 1886. Factory round a large .348 Winchester cartridge, 2/3 about magazine, beautiful workmanship. Made a long and a short tang version and either a 20 or 24 inch barrel, standard or deluxe. HEAVY, unless you get the lightweight version, but you will see that weight as a plus after you pull the trigger. Usually brings a fairly good price. Browning also brought a repro 71 that is also an eye catcher. Lot of eye appeal, have to ask yourself is it a practical addition or assuaging an obsessive compulsive disorder impulse.

I did a lot of looking for an original 1886 45-90. I found a lot of cut down, altered, and rebarreled rifles. Most were in pretty awful shape in the price range that I could afford (3000 or less). That is when I settled on the 348. I like mine a lot and I use it in the field as it was intended. No regrets!

I've owned four 86's, but only fondled 71's. Still have a 45-90 and a 40-65. They get shot at least a few times a year. This year, I broke the original firing pin for the 90. I ordered a replacement from Gun Parts Corp and then found that I already had one in my spare parts box. The broken pin is also repairable so now I have two spares.
