Maybe the 71 is the poor and 86?

Just for the sake of diversity, the 86 and 71 are the poor man's 1895 (square bolt) Marlin...

Chris if you ever decide to sell it, you will get back that money and more if you care for it. Life is short, pull the trigger and enjoy. I have. - Mike

True! The price is really just a deposit, redeemable upon transfer to the next caretaker.Michael Johnson wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 8:12 pm Chris if you ever decide to sell it, you will get back that money and more if you care for it. Life is short, pull the trigger and enjoy. I have. - Mike

They make great lever action target rifles. I rebarreled 2 of my long tang rifles with heavy weight octagon barrels. And with Soule sights, I can make that 500 buffalo gong ring like a church bell.

Don't know but it's really pretty
Didn't Sampson say the same about Delilah ?

Re: Winchester 71
Back in 1963, I was in Ken's gun shop in Mke browsing. Came upon a NEW M71 Win for $125.
Also on the rack was a lightweight M86 45-70, rebarreled/reblued by Gene Lechner then of Brookfield,WI
The M86 was only $60. Being a poor college student, I picked the M86 plus two boxes of new R-P brass.
My M'86 light weight has served me since 1963, taking many deer in the north woods of WI. First loads were
"Elmer Keith" loads- 53 gr 3031/405 Rem SP bullet. Said to be 1870fps. Killed like lightning. BUT, much meat damage
not to mention the hurt on my shoulder.
Got a Lyman 457483mold, RN converted mold to 1/4" FP, cast up at 385 gr. A Lyman handbook load of 48 gr 3031 is plenty. Said to be 1740fps.
Still kills well . One shot one kill. Little meat damage and much easier on the shoulder. I am even still reloading those two boxes
of R-P brass minus a couple I lost in the woods. I still have one piece of brass that I shot 3 or 4 deer with. I had marked the case head with pink nail polish.
Still glad I picked the M86 regardless of price.
Too bad I never got to take it into the black timber for Elk.

Re: Winchester 71
I have both 71 and 86’s. Love them all
The 348 I came over to the USA to shoot at the Clas nationals at Raton one year, had a ball.
I have 86s in 50/110, 45/70, 40/82 and they all serve a purpose.
The 348 brass shouldn’t be hard to find. I load with a 200g rcbs gaschecked mould and have them pushing 1800fps. It’s a nice load that I have shot 80 shot matches in a day with no ill effects.
My advise is If you like it buy it.
