chamber 40 70 SS

Post by kenny s »

I finally decided to do a chamber cast on my Shiloh 40 70 SS
I was getting some paper rings from the PP bullets. not effecting accuracy but still....
the cast I just did measures 2.54 in length. for a 2.50 case.

I now have a hundred cases that are cut at 2.495.

any thoughts? of course I'll still use them. maybe they will stretch on firing more?

note to self: ' always do a chamber cast before cutting hard to get cases!"

The last patch you push thru the barrel, wet them and squeeze them out as hard as you can, leave them just barely damp and use that instead of a dry patch. Squeeze them like you are trying to make them dry again and use that. You will slowly see your brass come back to length, key word, slowly.
Normal isn't coming back, but Jesus is.

Kenny s,
I'm not sure what year Shiloh you have or if it's been re-barreled by someone else, or how your measuring, but it's impossible to have a 2.540" chamber!!! My reamer hasn't changed since 1991 and it cuts a 2.504" which is only .004" longer than 2.500". Your paper ring is coming from the case neck stop which is why some people get the 7 degree lead which takes that out and turns it more into a funnel for paper patch.

In other words, if you're trimmed to 2.495", that means your brass is only .009" short, (3 human hairs), don't panic and sell all of your brass!!
Call me and we'll talk about it..

thanks Kirk. no, not worrying about it.
the gun is great and accuracy is fine....it's the hit of the range.
If some of my cases are short, I'll just use a case stretcher to get them as close to the 2.5 as I can.
and NO, I have no intention of ditching all my 40 70 SS cases. They work just fine.

Thanks.again....Ken

Copy that....that's why I have TWO Shiloh's...
a 50 90 BEAR and my new 40 70 SS. great guns and service.

note : went to the range today...hit NOTHING. not even paper. never had that happen!
came home. sent some lead cleaner down the bore and a bunch of Lead came out.
???
OK..I did a sero safe chamber cast yesterday.....Residue!? yup probably... cleaned it thoroughly and will forget today and
try t again next week.

this is a gun that normally gets 2 inches and sometimes much less at 100

note to self: KEEP THE DARN BORE FREE OF LEAD!. Ken
