Twist rate for 40-72 Hornady

Post by Perentie »

So I am building a 40-70 with full length Hornady brass. Just got Dave Kiff to draw up the reamer for PP only
My local barrel maker does a 40 cal barrel but only in a 1 in 13 twist.
Is this too fast or will it be OK?
I have a GM barrel but its 16 twist and I wanted to try something a bit faster.

I wouldn't hesitate, don't think it will be an issue. Pretty hard to strip a bullet....

OK Thanks.
I just had not heard of anyone using 13 in a .40 before.

Go with the 13 twist.
That was the twist of choice by several people including Dan T. and friends a few years ago for LONG BP bullets in the 40-72W aka 40-70 Hornady.
I went what I thought would be "one better" my 40-72 has a 12 twist Douglas on it.
Stabilizes my 1.55" long DDEPP(448 gr) or BFSS out to 1000yds. Load for the PP bullets is 85 gr Swiss 1.5.

Thanks Arnie, Looks like I will go for it then. Next, I have to make up my mind to go for round or octagonal.
They do the round at $A579 then an extra $A390 to make it octagonal.
I would go for another GM barrel but its got too hard to import now.

IMO round looks better and is cheaper, so it's a no-brainer...
