1877 Accuracy Question

Post by PhilRich »

Is the 1877 inherently less accurate that the 1874 because of having less metal in the action, all other factors being equal?

In other words, is it better to buy a rifle with the 1874 action to achieve the best accuracy for target shooting?

Thanks

The accuracy of the rifle lies in the barrel. The action and stock, if properly done, provide simply a means to hold the barrel and fire the shell. The 1877 action has less lock time which would tend to make it the more inherently accurate action as well as it is lighter which allows more weight to be placed in the barrel (while still making weight restrictions) where it does the most good. Not that the reduced lock time makes the rifle more accurate but rather it assists the shooter in making a better shot.

Every 1877 I have shot and handled is extremely accurate. One took 3rd overall at Nationals in iron-sights. I know I was spotting for Bryan, and can give an opinion on it’s excellent accuracy.
