HOT barrel

Post by kenny s »

her in Florida it gets 'slightly warm' in the summer months...
my 40 70 SS with the standard barrel gets HOT, and I mean HOT.

I wet wipe and dry wipe between shots, but accuracy goes south when it gets hot.

I'm thinking about rigging up a water washer on a bottle of water and the blow tube to wet it once in a while.
tip the barrel down and squeeze some water in from the breach, then wipe dry. ???
I could just slow down, I know.

anyone else come up with a trick? Ken

There is a company that makes barrel fans to cool them down

Siphon some ice water from a cooler through a bit of tubing.

But a better solution, albeit probably not practical, move. Man, how anyone can live in FL in the summer is beyond me. Iowa is way to hot as it is. Florida is crazy country.

Does your gun go inaccurate because of the fouling? Are you not getting it all out? I can't imagine that's the problem. If the gun is not shooting when hot, then is it walking in some direction on the target? I had that problem once and the problem was that it was poorly barreled. Until it was correctly rebarreled that gun would not shoot as it warmed up.

I live in the Mojave Desert and know well of this issue.
I use a spray bottle with distilled water to mist the outside of the barrel.
I only use distilled water because our tap/well water here is heavy in chems and alkali.
Also-make sure the back of the forearm has no contact with the front of the rec'r.

thanks Lumpy. I'll try the mist thing. The barrel is a new Shiloh, year old, and not the problem. the fore end has been relieved, so again, not the problem. and our water here is the same so I'll use distilled water.
my old eyes. ok. possible...
I like the spray bottle thing.

and if you Northern guys kid me any more about FL being HOT....I'll call you in Jan when I'm at the range in shorts having a great time.
I'm from New England, and left all the snow behind! 8)

I'll take January on the North any time.

So, how does your rifle become inaccurate?

My SWAG on the loss of accuracy. You're fouling out the bore.

He is wiping every shot, which makes it hard, but not impossible to foul out.

the facts:
40 70 SS Shiloh 74 one year old. perfect....
standard weight bbl, 30 in. 10 pound plus weight
load: 67 grains weighed 1 1/2 Swiss, one plastic, one 060 veggie wad.
die set to compress 1 /16 inch. not much compression
418 PP bullet, 1 in 20 BA custom mold, 9 lb wrapped wet,(damp) each weighed to one grain + or _
hand set, very very slight fact. crimp in die.
JBA cases, etc.

this load has printed under 2 inches at 100 consistently, and not now.
4 inches at 100. with flyers.
wood cross stick bench rests, rear bag rest, tight pull to shoulder.

a good load in the past, but not now. heat??? Ken

Kenny, a trick I do is use one of the blow tubes that Shiloh sells with an O-ring, insert it into the chamber and hold the barrel at a 45 degree angle and get a mouthful of ice water and blow the water through the tube and fill up the barrel. Let the water stay in barrel for 5-6 seconds and then tilt the barrel down and let the water run out the muzzle (the water will be hot due to heat transfer). I repeat again with another swallow. Hold pressure with your tongue on the blow tube to keep the water from going back on your gun, mouth and clothes. Very simple to do and you'll get a barrel that's too hot to even touch down to way below ambient temperature in 20-30 seconds. The O-ring on the blow tube is the key- if it's not a tight fit you'll make a mess. Follow right up with a dry patch and your barrel will be cold to touch.

Do plastic wads leave a residue in the rifling like sabots do in my muzzleloader?

Not in my experience. I've been using them for years now. 0.06" thick LDPE wads.
