hunting bullets

Post by bpcr shooter »

spent about an hour looking around for a good hunting bullet and came up empty handed. I currently have the RCBS 405gr and the 330gr molds. both of which are GC bullets, these work great in my BFR pistol but, dont shoot so well in my rifle and I would like to use plain base anyway. I am looking for a bullet in elk to buffalo hunting size. I like the meplat of the RCBS bullets just wondering what y'all think/have.......thanks matt

Ohh, I will be using BP as a propellant if that makes a difference.

Caliber would be helpful.

Intended target and distance too. I guess I missed the elk/bison part. Sorry about that.

Assuming it is a .45 that you are looking for, you could go with this 452-420-grain-paper-patch-1-cavity-flat-base-bullet-mould-jim452420

I had this made for a groove diameter PPB for my lever gun. But I also size it down and use it for a chicken bullet and a few other things. You could load it either way. There is a reason for the Semi-wadcutter like shoulder.

In general, I think you want something from a blunt round nose like the Lyman Gov't. built to a flat nose with a meplat in the 1/4-5/16" range.

I took a load that shot well for silhouette and made a jig to cut a flat nose on my table saw. No change to accuracy, and killed very well, with sufficient penetration and expansion of the 1:20 alloy.

I haven't shot anything but steel with this one,but I believe that it would perform well in hunting mode. Shoots well in my 45-90.

Yes, but.

Multiple shots in a dirty bore are not as accurate as the first shot, but 3-4 will be fine. After that, chances are, your animal is down or out of sight. In either case, there will be time to pull a wipe or two through the bore. The semi-wadcutter like rim on the ogive tends to scrape out fouling, rather than climb over it. You can use it groove or bore diameter, but in hunting bullets sometimes I prefer the larger diameter. You have to experiment to see what you like best.

KAL tool mold 45 TGBS in .442" dia. Patch with 9 lb onionskin. It is an adjustable mold 420 gr no problem all the way to 625 grs no problem. In the 1870-80's more buffalo and other game animals were killed with 420 to 500 gr ppb's in 44's and 45's than any other bullets. worked then and they work now. This mold is nose pour so it has a meplat (flatnose) it has worked on deer ,antelope and buffalo for me. Can't and won't believe that it won't work for you. Time for you to go retro the right way. bobw

Good info from all of the above posts. I will second Bob's recommendation of the .45 TGBS .442 mold. Bob is the one that got me onto this mold and I use it in my designated buffalo rifle which is a .45 2- 7/8" Shiloh Roughrider with the Loomer chamber, and barrel sights. Pretty much set up the way Bob does his and recommended to me. I have mine adjusted for 550 gr. bullets for buffalo but have taken a deer and number of buffalo with it out to 200 yards. One and done on all of them. Very accurate as well. Bob is right you don't have to have a 550 gr. bullet for buff and that 420 gr would work just fine.

On the one from KAL tool did you guys get the cupped base or flat?? or a better can of worms to open...…..whats better cupped or flat base?? I know the cupped was for the tail and our patches do not have a tail currently but is there a plus for having cupped??

Bullet I designed for buffalo works very well, with proper lube cookie can load and shoot all day long used 20-1 on buffalo works period. Deer elk size game may want a softer alloy.

bpcr, the cup is fairly shallow, I dry patch and do it Hyde style but a guy can use a tail method also. I buy with cupped base when I buy KAL. bobw

That is the best GG hunting bullet made for Lever or single shot rifles. It's a close copy of the Lyman 121-PH with a larger diameter.
Loaded properly you can shoot as many as you want without fouling control.
