Something a little different that works

Post by Kurt »

I shot a few rounds yesterday and I ran out of Lemishine so I took some of Carolyns stuff she uses in the dish washer and covered the cases with water and put one of the packs it in the Frankfort Arsenal Tumbler and turned it on for one hour. When it finished I dumped it in a classifier that holds the ceramics so it don't drop in the 5 gallon bucket, it just drains off the dirty water and man what a surprise I got looking at the brass. It came out cleaner than anything I ever used.

The chlorine in the dishwasher detergent will literally burn the carbon out of the brass. What I don’t know is if it will cause corrosion fractures in the brass. I have soaked my brass in it and it turns the black carbon fouling to white ash.

I've been using the Cascade Platinum 16X for sometime now, works great. I add two cap full of lemon juice to mine. Looks like what you have already has the lemon in it.

I have tried Cascade liquid & it does work great but no better than Strat-O-Sheen burnishing compound with a quirt of Dawn or Dave Maurer’s solution. All three do a better job than Lemi Shine powder dishwashing detergent booster with or without a squirt of Dawn detergent (works better with a squirt). I don’t know what’s in Strat-O-Sheen or Dave Maurer’s solution but the following are the listed ingredients in Cascade:
• HYDROZINCITE
• COLORS
• SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE
• NON-IONIC SURFACTANT
• ANTIFOAM
• FRAGRANCE
• SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE (see note)
• ALCOHOL ALKOXYLATES
• POLYACRYLATES
• AMINE COBALT SALT
• POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL
• WETTING AGENT
• SODIUM SILICATE
• AMYLASE
• PROTEASE
• ENZYMES
• SODIUM SULFATE
• SODIUM CARBONATE
• SODIUM CARBONATE PEROXIDE
• PHOSPHATES
• OXYGEN BLEACH (see note)

Note - oxygen bleach is not a chlorine bleach, but sodium hypochlorite is the main ingredient in chlorine bleach, so Cascade has both. For more on this see https://cleanmyspace.com/what-is-oxygen-bleach/. If you do some research you'll find that sodium hypochlorite is not recommended to use for cleaning brass, even in low concentrations.

BTW, this is a timely subject for me as I'm in the middle of working up a short article on cleaning BPCR brass.

I shoot a lot of rounds every week so in time if the brass gets brittle I will find out. I will keep the 100 round box separate from the rest.
I sure like the looks of the cases on Inside and the primer pockets.

I was thinking that I would be okay using it on my .45-70 or .40-65 brass but not my expensive 44-77 brass. Then it occurred to me that the neoprene liner in the tumbler might not last very long. Neoprene is some tuff stuff but dishwasher soap is designed to disolve everything. I haven’t worked on a dishwasher for decades and I don’t remember if they have any neoprene parts.

I've been using an ounce of simple green and an ounce of white vinegar for years. Just cover the cases with hot water add media and the soap and vinegar, tumble an hour and bright shiny cases ya have !

Anything that cuts down on time in the tumbler time and produces the desired result is good.

Kurt, what the heck are you doing? You've completely reversed course.
That brass is nowhere near the "Beautiful", "DIRTY WATER GRAY" PLATING I seen you doing at Big Hill a couple of years ago.

Yeh Shadow I heard the snickers about my dingy cases that made me look for a brighter way :)
I missed not getting to the hill this year but things just did not work out this year.
You better upgrade your ear plugs because I'm bringing the loudenboomer again next year.

Hint, change the water, we got fresh, clean water in Big Sky country & it's free  I understand they charge extra for that option in Illionisastan
I'm not worried, by that time you'll have detached both retinas, or you'll be concussed, or both

Heck I have that problem now shooting my girly gun. I have a wrinkled retina and trouble seeing a double image through the apertures. I have an appointment to get the lamps fixed. And hopefully he can blast the floaters out like he said.

HEY Blackstone.
when I came back from the range today, I decided to try your
once of white vinegar, once of simple green cleaner (always have a gallon on hand for the house anyway) a 'splash of each"
I put it in my wet tumbler with the ceramic I always use, and...

IT MADE THEM CLEANER AND SHINIER THAN ANYTHING I'VE USED BEFORE.
Cheap, easy, and it took 2 hours instead of the usual three....next time I'll try one hour as you suggested.

good tip...thanks...Ken

Can the vinegar and simple green be premixed and just stored for use as needed?
