I always use a dry patch with any bore cleaning animal. It ensures that the chamber is dry. the larger diameter of the chamber may compromise the critter's ability to squeegee initially. Also, bore critters wear and eventually can let stuff pass. You can and should replace washers every so often (annually for instance), and the dry patch will ensure that you don't find out the hard way that it isn't doing the job completely. I periodically check the dampness of patches to determine if the time for new rubbers has come.

Does the critter and patch go up bore together or is the dry patching a second trip?
