Re: new rifle
Thx, Ian. No grease cookie here. That would make loading paper-patch as big a pain-in-the-a** as loading GG. Loading is a necessary chore in order to shoot. Both my animals and my wife refuse to learn, so I'm stuck doing it. Tried to con the grand-kids, but couldn't figure out how to make it happen using a video screen and only their thumbs (think texting).

The first two bullets good, but there are a couple of things that don't look right on the base of that 3rd bullet. That line where the paper got a wrinkle in it and the base at the very bottom looks somewhat rebated, undersize compared to the shank. It just doesn't look good at the base not sure what caused those two things.
There are so many things that can happen to a lead bullet when it gets that hard kick in the butt that it's hard to believe any of them fly true and straight to 1000 yards!
Thanks for the pictures, that a start.
I just blew it up at high magnification and some is the camera angle looking at the base bottom. But yes I see a slight rebate or maybe a shadow, cant say for sure. It could be when the charge went off the bullet sank into the wad a smidge. I don't have the data sheet what was used or what I was looking for when I did this test with out digging in the hard drive back up that would give me the wad/load/alloy and what I was looking for when I fired this bullet. That bullet was cropped out of a larger selection of recovered bullets. It also could be the under fold of the paper that got pushed up seating the bullet in the case????

Back to chambers. Would their design dictate preference for wads versus grease cookies?
I shoot a 45-110 with Orville’s chamber and at 200 yards accuracy seems better with a cookie. But I have not shot enough rounds to get empirical data. I also shoot a 45-70 roller and it seems to favor wads. Large chamber, I need a chamber cast.

Mike, that's something your rifle is going to have to answer. Looking at the equipment list load data from the fall 1879 Creedmoor, most shooters were using a thin wad, some a felt wad, and some no wad at all. Some used fixed ammunition and some muzzle loaded their bullets, and a couple may have breech seated.
Eddie uses a grease cookie, and it's a standard shiloh 45-90 chamber.

Not sure it would work for you with softer bullets but so far all of my pp loads with the 12-1 Alloy like a .030 veggie under a .030 ldpe wad

Re: new rifle
I am using 14:1 but have really thought about bumping that up to 12 based on what I saw in the pool testing. For now I made my patches a little longer but when my buddy opens his pool back up I may do up some 12:1 and see what the swimming pool has to say About them. may try shooting some on target also. As far as grease cookies go I have absolutely no experience with them. I’ll probably never use them. Maybe if I was hunting and wanted to be able to use a quick follow up shot or something but I don’t hunt. Or maybe it would be fun to try and replicate and original style loading. That would be a fun experiment but for match shooting I won’t use them

Re: new rifle
ian,
original style hunting, or original style target?
they had different ammo for different jobs in the day.
and they had different powder.
I have read of breaking down 40/2.5" ammo in the day, and it had no grease wad, yet they shot the pp ammo to test trajectory dirty.
