HA! But I think the wind has been blowing at every match I've been to!
Thanks for the kind words, guys. Hopefully I'll get out to the range a few more times this month. The mail woman left three 50 lb boxes of 16:1 alloy in my mailbox the other day. Amazingly, the mailbox is still serviceable....

Kurt, seriously...…...I for one won't be surprised if Aviator posts a sub MOA group at 200.

Re: 200 yd postal match Nov-Dec 2019
I finally got out today. It's the first time the wind wasn't blowing like crazy and our deer season is over so I didn't have to worry about upsetting any hunters with my shooting. I shot 2 rifles, my 40/65 Shiloh and my 40/70 Shiloh. I didn't have my regular shooting glasses. They went to the lab for new lenses with the optical center moved on the right lens for better target discrimination. The glasses place sent the frames and lenses both to the lab to help ensure that they get it right. The bullseye was sort of a gray blob but I shot anyway. Results were less than spectacular with both groups around 6 1/4". I can only get 190 yards without moving the target dangerously up the hill. I'll post pictures tomorrow. I know both rifles will shoot much better because I've done it with both. Hell, my trapdoor shoots better than I shot today.

Zack it can be done. But I don't think it can be every time one goes out with 10 shot groups.desert deuce wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 8:06 pm Kurt, seriously...…...I for one won't be surprised if Aviator posts a sub MOA group at 200.

I have done it a few times with 5 shots with my new .40-65 I just started to work with getting it ready for using it for the silhouette matches but I haven't had time to spend with it as much as I would like. This rifle has a very tight chamber were a bore diameter PP bullet is a snug fit in a clean fired unsized case and a 4 degree/1.5 funnel transition chamber end that shot a 5 shot ladder load with 63 gr of 3F swiss that went 3/4" vertical 1-1/8" horizontal and another using 2F Swiss that went just a little larger.
But I haven't been able to repeat this every time out or with more than 5 shots fired.

Brian the wex turned and getting down right miserable. If I go out anymore I will have to drag the ice shanty to the range with a heater to keep my pinky's warm so I can feel the trigger.

Aviator, not being picky but...…….I keep looking at that target you posted and thinking (that's where the curiosity began) you know that group actually looks less than 3.160" and it is true that looks can be deceiving.
So, I am wondering what the measurement would be if one used the one inch line on the tape on the far left hole and moved the tape down on to the far right hole? This is the wondering time of year you know?

Re: 200 yd postal match Nov-Dec 2019
Well, I measured center to center on the widest separated holes, laying the tape right over the holes.
I actually generally put the 10 inch mark on the center of the left hole, and then read to the center of the furthest hole.
For my records on group sizes, I measure differently than this. I record vertical spread and horizontal spread, not the diagonal widest separated. I figure vertical spread is the best indicator of the load, and horizontal is the indicator of the wind (and my ability to read it). Though of course some conditions can also affect vertical. Not an exact science!
I'll keep trying! Kurt has a point. Ten shots without letting one slip away is not easy!

Could not agree more about the importance of vertical dispersion.
Just know that it is O.K. to submit smaller groups. You have arrived at the point where 'most' on this forum won't hold it against you. Go ahead and submit those sub minute of angle groups.
For your own information, know that your grease groove load measures up. I found that out in my rifles long ago and once you prove something to yourself about the ability of "your rifle and load" you end up reproving that conclusion over and over again. The only results you have control over are your own.
Keep on amazing us.

I would love to know what batch of powder you are using, if you don't mind posting.Aviator wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2019 1:30 pm Made it to the range again today!
Mid 40's, with wind mostly in my face 10 to 15 gusting to 25.
Same rifle and load as my previous entry, but a better group today.
Too bad that one shot got away from me!

I've been using Brent's wiping solution. Mainly cause im getting real lazy and it comes premixed. Im not going to do the antifreeze trick, so im either gonna switch to the
BH209 loads or use whiskey for my wiping solutuon. That way if they do get hard, i can just pop them in my mouth to thaw them out.
