Kurt
how did that snow get piled there ?
Naturally or plowed up.
I know what happens to all the snow I plow off the runway.
A week later it is like a rock inside,

Brian.
That was about a 2.5 foot snow fall with high winds and drifted into some pretty high drifts. I use a 6' snow blower and that pile is behind and above the layer the bullets are in and that picture with the cookie munchers on the pile was taken some time after and it was settled up hard on it's surface.
I have hit lime chips when I make piles. I use for gravel and it makes a definite unmistakable mark on the bullet.

I would expect there be a good chance that a bullet nose slumping to one side in the barrel to key hole as it would be deformed out of concentric and the spin RPM should send the out of balance bullet end over end at some point down range.

Bob....I received a card in the mail today. You didn't need to do that but thanks. I bought my grandson dinner. Enjoy the magazines.

Re: Bullet slump and accuracy with differentt alloys
there are 2 types of bullet slump.
one where the nose slumps sideways, which puts the bullet off balance causing obvious problems with stability and b.c.
the other is when the nose slumps backward but remains straight.
this will also reduce b.c., but b.c. will be consistent from shot to shot.
what it can do is cause so cacause bore riding greaser noses to expand into the rifling.
these noses are unlubed and can cause leading in the barrel with obvious effect on accuracy.
2 ways to overcome this problem other than paper patching.
one is to have a lubed bore as in blowtubing or leaving some wiping fluid in there if it contains oil.
the other might be to have the bore riding section with micro mini grooves on it, containing grease.
it is amazing how hard a bullet needs to be for bore riding noses not to bump into the rifling, and when they are that hard, other issues can arise.
the paul jones creedmoor bullet is particularly bad for this.

Re: Bullet slump and accuracy with differentt alloys
should have elaborate on b.c. variations in previous post.
you will never get good verticle unless b.c. is consistent.
all work trying to manage verticle is wasted if this condition is not controlled.
the greater the range, the bigger the problem.
