Slip 2000

Post by TAA »

Dumb question time.

After seeing this product mentioned in a U-Tube video, I bought some. Following the instructions for use, the patches come out clean. I expected them to be black with carbon. The Model 74 is 10-years old and only BP has been used in it. The barrel is a 16 twist Badger, .40 2 1/2.

My guess....the promotion of the product was for smokeless loads, not BPCR? Or my carbon is so impacted it can’t be forced or dissolved out.

Maybe you don't have carbon in your barrel.

Yes, that’s the other possibility.

The U-tube presenter said all of us have carbon in the first 4-6” of the bore. But he did not distinguish if the source was BP or smokeless. I can’t recall seeing any of the frequent posters here discuss the subject, which is why I suspect the culprit is smokeless, if there is a build-up.

My .50-2.5 has over 20K rounds shot through it. I read the same thing a few years ago about the carbon in the throat.
I looked through the Hawkeye bore scope that has 23-4 X magnification and I ran tight patches through it that come out just as clean as they go in.
The only accuracy problem that shows up over time is from a different powder lot and with a simple ladder load it gets back to accuracy it had with the old lot of powder.
Maybe I don't know what carbon on a patch looks like but if the patch comes out as white as it went in I figure the bore is clean. :)

or slip 2000 does not work :?
smokeless powders and the pressures they work at will potentially cause carbon foiling as hard as ceramic, and this needs to be dealt with before it starts.

Carbon is a byproduct of ignition in a Black Powder Cartridge Rifle. That is a physical fact of chemistry and interior ballistics. PS Carbon as Graphite used to coat BP is an inorganic and water as a solvent will not touch it.

I have seen plenty of white patches coming out of a rifle for years, shooters swearing their bore is clean. Soak a patch of Butch’s BP boreshine or Buffalo Arms M-Pro 7 and run it down the barrel a dozen or so strokes. Let it set, for a few minutes, get a tight patch and see the results for your self. Same shooters with their home made lubes swear no leading. Use some kroil or turpentine, double tight patches watch the look on their faces when you pull lead out. I saw it once at a Shiloh match lead looked like flower petals pushing out of the Gooves. I believe most of his problem was crap lube and the lack of knowledge of dealing with fouling at 6% Relative Humidity. But also a lot of carbon in his bore grabbing lead.

General Motors top engine cleaner will also strip carbon from a barrel. I watched Dan Theodor pull tons of carbon out of Doc Lay’s rifle at Phoenix on year With the stuff and it certainly restored his accuracy it was after 16,000 rounds had been down the tube. If you don’t think you have carbon in your barrel, the only one you are kidding is yourself. Believe what you will, my advice is cheap, it is free.

One last factoid, the US Military came up with M-Pro 7 to remove the carbon of the barrels of their chain guns, such as the Bushmaster, and others.
