Rifle butt plate

Post by James »

I’m about to stock a 74 Sharps and would like to do this one with a sporting crescent rifle butt. I’ve read that Sharps used a brass one with sliver plate. Any guidance to the correct size and shape or a source for one that would be appropriate would be appreciated. Getting it plated won’t be a problem.

I have restocked many guns and this is the 50 90 I did with xxxx custom wood from Treebone years ago.
The butt plate is the hardest to get right and most visible after you're done.

go VERY slow and use a candle and lampblack to take off a little at a time.
when done, buff with fine sandpaper to fit the metal to wood perfectly, by FEEL....

I also did the cast pewter nosecap shown....

then think about plating etc.

good luck and post pictures....Ken

Thanks, Kurt. That’s the type.
Ken, nice work. Don’t worry I’ve stocked many Sharps. I will be poreing a nose cap as well as this will be a Hartford model with the beveled hammer.

CPARIFLES.COM used to sell many styles of plates. They may have what you want, but call Shiloh and see if they have a spare they would sell you.

Kurt, would you measure the length of the tang and width of the butt? And a view from the rear so I can try to match some butt plates I’ve found on line.
Thanks for everybody’s help.

Yes I can. I will take some close up's in the morning when it's light out.
I build a few ML rifles and got most of the iron furniture from Track of the Wolf and Dixie. The Southern Mountain rifle has a butt plate very close to what my Hartford has that can be reshaped some. Also the early Hawken is close.
send me a PM with your E-Mail It would be easier to send photo's then here.

My oh my, those muzzleloaders are truly purdy! I have always had a weakness for Hawken rifles, flint and caplock. Have studied the book entitled 'Hawken Rifles', the mountain man's choice, by John D. Baird. I also like the book of John Clymer's art work. Many years ago, around 1978, I bought a custom Hawken caplock rifle from a man from Montana, a J. Henry, stamped 'J. Henry 006' on the bottom flat of the barrel. I cant tell you where in Montana he was from. It was a .54 caliber caplock. What a great shootin' rifle. It became my elk rifle during late-season muzzleloading season here in WA State. I then bought Mr. Henry's 007. Both were excellent-shootin' 54's. Beautiful wood on both, nice browned iron, and both felt real comfortable/natural on the shoulder.

Nice rifles, guys
