Track of the Wolf has kits and parts.

Which kit from them were you unhappy with; and why?

Hey Raymond, good to hear from you! Long time no see! Hope all is well with you, Margo and family! Ran into Mike Gephardt at Coffey and Guns three weeks ago. Usually see him at the Great Northern Guns Christmas party but they didn't have it this year for some reason.
I want to do my own parts inletting from now on Dave. The tang mortise was so over size I had to use an alternate from the lolly pop that it came with. Both are original to the design but I would have preferred the lolly pop. I could have filled it in with a plug from the stock remnants I had to cut off but decided I'd rather live with the alternate tang/breech plug. Also I paid premium for a tiger strip maple that is just barely striped from what I can see before staining and it took six months to get it after the rest of the kit arrived. I had to move the barrel back about .250 in relation to the lock mortise to get the proper vent center in the pan I wanted. I don't like cutting into the breech plug face to make a pocket for the vent hole as it is difficult to clean out properly. This is one part of the design I don't care for so changed it.
I did get all the dovetails cut and the breech plug fit last winter but was stalled waiting for the stock.
I hope I got the length of pull correct as these are made to be mounted on your upper arm not shoulder as most long guns are. Feels pretty good but a might strange to the usual stocks I make. Drop seems about right but also is substantial to what I normally use. Truth is I am pretty much a novice at flint gun making which is quite different in many from building BPCRs.
I decided I didn't like the but hook extension after all that work of getting it welded on and dressed out so cut it off , heated it up with a torch and reshaped to lessen the hook and give me enough length to get to the toe plate fit I wanted. Turned out good though in the end. I'll get up some more pictures when I get more done.

I should say that I will order from TOTW again but probably not in kit form. They sell Colerain and Rice barrel as well as GM if I remember correctly ,which have good reputations but both are made of 12L14 as opposed to GMs 1134 which I prefer. I was surprised at the cost when all was said an done as it came to 1000.00 bucks as a kit! I had thought a kit would be around 6-700.00.

Mike if your not going to send the wood back you can make stripes that look like tiger stripes taking paraffin wax or B Wax and make stripes.
Take a piece of scrap Maple and try it to see what it looks like. I did this to one of mine and it looked good.

Mike your stripes will look better if you use an alcohol based stain instead of an oil base stain.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'll do some experimenting as I am pretty much wondering around in the dark with flint lock guns.

The side plate top hemisphere is one of the booboos as I got a wide cut on the right side some how with my circle chisel. The rest are fit about as tight as I can cut them. It doesn't look so bad straight on but I put a bit of angle on it so it would show up. Man I hate it when I flub up things like this! The butt hook , toe plate and finger guard came out well.

The flint is from some of the Keokuk heat treated rock that comes out of Oklahoma. I was told it wouldn't work for gun flints but it turned out to be better than any gun flints I have ordered and the best part is they are made from left over flakes from point production.

Now the wood has to be brought down to the furniture with rasp and file before disassembly , stain and finish.

Good idea Ken. I left it a bit proud any way so it won't take much squash out to fill the errant chisel cut. Thanks for the fix tip I hadn't thought off.
