Re: Polished Blue Barrels
I have polished some barrels right down to 1000 grit.
When you do this you have to take more care to get all scratches completely out or they will really show up.
They look real nice but the downside is they can reflect light off the barrel into your sights.
But I use a tube extension on my front sight as a sunshade.

Ck the Shiloh site as they have a fix for that, on the top flat of the bbl.
You're SOL on a round bbl.

Polished finish doesn’t have to be mirror bright to look good. A even 320 grit finish is very nice and not to shiny. The bead blasted finish is popular but consider a even sanded finish like the old rifles.

Re: Polished Blue Barrels
A couple of thoughts about polished bluing or more accurately blackening. A polished blued barrel will show imperfect barrel striking (waves) in a heart beat (especially with round barrels. A polished surface does not dissipate heat as efficiently as does a matt finish nor does it hold preservative oil as well.
A matt finish allows deeper penetration and more area coverage of the bluing agent because of the surface porosity producing a deeper finish and it helps dealing with heat mirage (faster barrel cooling) on a hot day because of the more rapid heat dissipation.
It is true that it will make more mirage from barrel heat if one has to shoot fast but a polished barrel will also produce enough to mess with sight picture so in my opinion the faster heat dissipation is the lesser of two evils.

Just a note, don't use Electrical tape to sticky on a hot barrel. Get Hockey tape comes off at end of Day

Re: Polished Blue Barrels
I like the polished option better, it is closer to the original finish than what the matte is.
