I have a couple rifles with nice wood. The Shiloh I ordered nice wood but the other three I just ordered plain unfinished in the rough wood and did the final finishing and was really pleased with the figure the plain wood turns out to be. But I really like the plain straight grain wood rifles.

This is black walnut from Treebone Carving used by Dave Higginbotham for my 50-90 Roller hunting rifle.

I wonder who supplied wood for Axtell? They had some nice sticks.

That Axtell wood and my Axtell wood looks like it was cut from the same plank.

Here are a couple.

Since I'm left handed, this is the side I look at. The High Wall on the left is the same one I posted at the beginning of this thread. Next a dark tight curl black walnut. (The grain doesn't photo well). The middle is my Cody Ballard High Wall. I've worn most of the color off and this is it's third barrel. Next is my Shiloh 77. Again the photo doesn't do the stock justice. Finally, is my .22 Low Wall. I stocked this one with straight grain, non-figured black walnut. There is just a warmth that black walnut and blued steel have.

Kurt - Very nice set of rifles. Just received my new CPA and it looks pretty much like your middle rifle with the loop lever. I was planning on doing some finish work on the wood myself, but seeing your handiwork am wondering if you would want to do mine?

For those who do not know, CPA stocks lots of great wood from mild ($$) to wild to select from. Their wood generally seems to be a 'cut above' what one expects.

When are you going to show us some of your sticks Smoke? I know that you like purdy wood.

Nope Glenn, I'm not for hire

Yes I was very surprised with their wood when I got the first rifle from them with selecting their basic wood.
That wood has three coats of pure tung oil and 15 coats of Formby tung oil blend sanded with 800 grid wet dry sandpaper after 13 coats and and finished with steel wool.
I quit, I retired.
