45-120 Brass help

Post by Steve Holt »

Just jumping back in and scrounging supplies.
Got a mix of brass for the rifle already but never enough, right?
I also have a few boxes of RCBS 45 Basic. I thought would work till I put my caliper on it and it’s 3.16.
I found some online with a photo of one in a caliper that’s shows a hair over 3.25 and bought a few of them.
They just came in and they’re not as described and they too are 3.16.
All my old brass for this rifle, all measured 3.248/9 and is what I’ve always shot in this gun.
Decent deal on the new stuff but not exactly what I needed.
I can use it for other stuff so I’ll keep it but I don’t think it’ll work for what I need.
Opinions?

I have many new boxes of the RCBS "45 Basic" and it is all 3 1/8. I plan to part with it since I am going to rebore the 45-120 to 50-70. It is nice brass and have been using it in my Shiloh but it is a bit short. 30 years ago I think it was Jim Georgen was selling tons at $16 a box of 20.

Steve--If I read your post correctly, your new brass is .009 short. Nine thousandths. That is the thickness of three hairs off your arm. If you full length size that brass it will likely grow enough in length to give you the nine thousandths, and then some. Load it and shoot it with a grease groove bullet and THEN resize it, and it will definitely grow the nine thousandths. After all this, I have to tell you that your rifle won't mind the brass being .009 short, and you won't be able to tell the difference. Shoot straight, rdnck.

You can also stretch the brass with using a roll crimp with a GG bullet. Just don't over do the roll crimp or you will stretch it into the throat.
But like rdnck said 9-10 thousands is good to use. That long case will get longer as you shoot it.

Rdnck, easy to do, but your decimal point is one position off. It is 90 thousandths not 9. This would be more than twice the difference between "long" 38-55 brass and the current. How much difference does this make in the shooting?

That’s 90 Thousands short not 9.

.090 vers .009. .009 would read 3.241 guys..... come on.

I just bought 110 pcs of RCBS basic off of my brother.
He offered it on the web and no takers.
It’s all 3.250” plus or minus a couple thou.
