On my 40 cal set, I removed some bristles and have a felt pellet on the
"shank" as well as on the front end of the brushes.
The "40 cal" pellets I bought are rather large for the bore, especially after
they are screwed on to the brush. I did run them over a larger drill bit to open up
the hole so they would not swell up so much upon installation.
I found the critters rather hard to push thru the bore for the first couple times of use.
Also, found that a slightly loose rubber washer works better than if tightly held.
Anyways, now I got to make up a set for my 38-50
Just hope we get to shoot matches this spring/year../??????

Those look good. The rear ends are cool. You must be lathe-equipped.

Seems someone steered you towards the right brushes and felts.

It's not a bad idea to chamfer the ends of your plastic pieces that hold the rubber washers. Just a suggestion.

Arnie, I did try the "2" felts and it was really hard to push thru so I dropped the rear one and they push thru really well.

BFD..... yes I am lathe equiped :D :D and this is why I love this fourm…...sooooo much knowledge and people are willing to share, to keep this GREAT sport alive!!

Jim, Would you chamfer both on the one side?? would it be so that the plastic doesn't cut the washer??

Thanks...…..Matt

I am in the process of making a set of critters for my 40-65 and am looking for some guidance on the materials for the squeegee. I have done a prototype using an O ring, but have my doubts about it. The one I used is 1/4" ID x 3/8" OD x 1/16" thick and when I place it in the groove I cut in a 3/8" diameter piece of delrin rod the OD becomes 0.410" (I can adjust this by varying the depth of the groove). It seems to have worked fairly well on the initial trials but I think the O ring needs to be at least 1/8" thick or maybe a washer as you have used. At 1/16" thick it just looks delicate. Where do any of you who have made 40 caliber critters source parts...O rings, washers, grommets, etc and which parts do you use?
Thanks for the help.

I used neoprene 1/2in washer, if you cant find the outer size you need maybe a wad cutter can trim it??

The 40 cal is more difficult to make up bore pigs.
For the rubber squeegee rings, I used my home made wad punch (.413")
and cut washers out of some sheet rubber I have(about 1/16"+thick0
and then I clamped down a piece of 0.060 LDPE on my 1/4" HDPE cutting board
on the drill press.
then, I cut a ldpe wad. Removed the wad cutter with the ldpe wad, and then replaced it in the chuck
with a 1/8" hole punch. Then I set a rubber washer in the "hole" in the ldpe sheet and
bring down the hole punch to cut the center hole -Centered- in the rubber washers.

See page 3 of the following link for my post (AzTBH) on what components work for my 40-70SS bore pigs: The combination has been working fine. I especially like the pistol length bore brushes since they fully seat into the chamber and hence do not flex when first starting to push into the bore,

I made up a bunch using wipers cut from a silicone baking sheet. I punch them out with my wad punch. Only tricky part is getting the center hole lined up. These are really flexible and work great for a squeegee. You can use two if you want, as they are easy to push through. I hold them on with a brass nut.

Currently making up qty 50 .40 cal. "pigs" and playing with different squeegee materials. Today I put a slightly over sized hole in a few (for self centering) of my .062 ldpe wads to see how they worked and check the effort to push them through the bore. They seemed to work fine, how long they will last is unknown. Has anyone tried this? The punched ldpe have a sharp tapered edge.....that could work? I just used a leather punch for the holes.
