Re: scope question.
Yes.
I shoot silhouette. I have an MVA B5 with No. 2 mount on a Shiloh No. 1 Sporter in 45-70 with a 30" heavy octagon.
A scope allows me to see the target clearly. With open sights, for me, anything beyond 300 yds. is just a black blob.
A B5 works well out to 600 yds. I had several hits at the Quigley last year at that range. Past that, I really couldn't tell you. The 805 yd buffalo was a big fat zero for score. The ground was damp and spotter couldn't see where rds were hitting.

Re: scope question.
for me its starting to get tough past 800 and at 1000 its very faint. My order will be coming up this late fall so I do have some time to look thru a few and decide. but I have zero intentions to take this rifle in the field, I have another for that.

Re: scope question.
I'm 66 and have worn glasses all my life. I shoot both Irons and scope at bullseye targets and silhouette. On bullseye targets and no wind my scores are near the same with either sight.
Silhouette requires that you have a good spotter for scope and a great spotter for Irons. If there is a good cross wind you can see your misses and hits on a good backstop but with irons you are totally dependent on your spotters capabilities. You are also limited with irons on a cloudy or rainy day and and when you have poor backstops. ( By poor I mean when the back stop has light and dark areas, maybe wet, no dust and vegetation in some areas and shadows early or late in the day ). If you can only do one, get a 8x or 10x scope. If you are a purist, get irons. If you have the funds, get both.

Re: scope question.
All of my Shilohs are set up for a scope. I have a rifle being built specifically for long distance and will be set up for scope. I am basically blind as a bat without my glasses, but with the help of a good eye doctor, I am still able to shoot irons at some matches with closer distances. Now I have some sort of double cataract in my right eye, which makes it even more difficult. Have Shiloh put scope mounts on it, a tang sight base and you will be set to go either way. I have MVA 23" scopes, which allow me to go 1000 yds. and beyond.

Re: scope question.
I picked up a leatherwood for a good price and put it away for when I may need it some day. Now to find some good mounts for it at a gun show or garage sale. Fat Chance Ahe?

Re: scope question.
Mike,
I'm forced to switching to the scope. That Leatherwood I been looking at them and I know that they are not NRA legal but that don't matter to me because I can use it here and the Gong shoots. Those mounts look like unertl, how much adjustment vertical does their scale have marked?

I don't know Kurt, they were in a cup along side the scope and I brought them home, put the scope away and never looked the mounts over closely. I wasn't very impressed with them though even with a cursory look!

Here you go Kurt. Took some pictures of what I have. Looks like both scales for windage and elevation are graduated in Vernier but made for King Kong to manipulate! I don't know much about these scopes, this one measures 36" cap to cap.

The guy I bought it from said it came off a Sharps. No scratches or dents and the glass and reticle are good.
