Range box options?
Well since it looks like I will be stuck around my place a while, I have been looking at building a wood range box. What are most of you using out there when going to competition shoots. Like to see some ideas be it wood, store-bought, plastic, steel or whatever. I have seen some at the Friendship shoots but can't seem to make up my mind.
Thanks.
Thanks.

This is mine. It holds 90 paper patched cartridges (nose up). Made of Sugar Maple from my property.
I am building another of cherry just like it right now, but it will be 2" shorter and hold 72 cartridges.

Made me into a big fan of sugar maples. I thought that maples were really boring prior to this one. Almost did not bother to have it sawn up into lumber, but I needed shop benches and bench tops. It made a lot of them - huge tree. Wish I had more.
It is nice wood to work with and finishes easily.

Re: Range box options?
I just did a Line box this weekend in curly white oak. Didn't take any pics but I really liked it. Still have a couple of boards of the stuff. I think some will go into a range box for our Regional. I can't plane it, so I have to dimension sand it. Promised three as drawing prizes. Hope this shit passes so we can hold the match in May. If not, I'll be ahead for next year.

Wow, nice work Brent,I particularly like your corner joints ! I have a cousin in Michigan that had a bunch of Cherry plank sawed and lined the whole inside of his earth home (field stone in the side of a hill) with it. Pretty cool looking.

Brent,
I just got this picture of the curly oak line box I sent out on Monday. The recipient tooled the leather handle and sent me a picture. I've not seen oak with that consistent curly figure. Woody

Nice! What do you use for finish? You have a lot of curliness in those Indiana trees it seems. That curly Ash you turned out a while back was pretty nice too.
that handle is a really nice upgrade.
I've got to turn some lectures this morning but may get back to wood this afternoon.

BFD, nice box! Except for those "odd-looking" cartridges. I'm a GG man myself. Too old and stupid to learn anything else.

Brent,
On that box, I used Watco dark walnut danish oil. My preference is Watco Teak oil, but I needed the staining of the dark walnut.
