Building a indoor range

Post by Kurt »

This lock down is starting to work on me :D
With all of these shipping containers sitting around you can get them for $400. or less. These boxes come in 8'X8'X40'.
Why not get 15 of these and put them end to end and you have a fine 200 yard indoor range. Perfect for noise dampening if that is a problem with no wind for load developments :D

I had plans at one time to do that very thing with 36 inch galvanized road culvert but decided I probably would not get away with it in MId-town Anchorage as some one would surely Narc on me at some point when hearing the noise from the fan driven smoke vents I had in the plan.

Is your thinking to bury them Kurt? That was my plan with the 36 inch culvert with a heated block house at one end so one could stand or sit over a bench and shoot down range to 50 yards ( all the length my two lots would accommodate).

When I build this house I was going to burry 5' manhole barrels for 100 yards with the first laid in the concrete foundation forms when they poured the walls and have the room in the basement. But changed my mind :D

Oh really, $400, I just inquired about (stood in), in Wibaux 40' containers.
Reddish brown $4600 or,
they call them 1 trippers, Walmart unloads the Communist China junk out of them, literately once used, $6500 - $6900, cream colored or,
Orange ones $4900

I'll take all of them kurt.

Delivered

BTW, we just built an indoor range here in Baker, you'll need a million bucks

I just did a search on those boxes and I see they come pretty high. https://www.ebay.com/i/223896587054?chn=ps The guy at the saw mill has two he uses for lumber dryers and he said one was $400 and the other was 700 but I don't know where he got them.

A Milian is not enough for the one that just opened a few miles north of me https://www.smokingunworx.com/indoor-range sure is nice but I think I will still shoot in my yard :)

Make sure your bullets won't it the ceiling half way down the tunnel. Probably safe but if you are starting at 3 ft shooting from the bench or 5 ft, shooting offhand, could be an issue.

That is why I cut it short too 200 yaRDS. :) but it would be good to practice bank shots like playing pool
Maybe the dirt diggers would still hit the X ring :)

There ya go. Bankin' 'em in!

I think the concussion and the fumes would be deadly.

If I would ever build an indoor range there would be a wall at the firing line with a plexiglass window with a slot so the muzzle would be on the other side to dampen the noise and fumes. Like the Hornady test lab has.

It's going to get pretty smokey in there Kurt :-) :-) :-)

My brother bought a few of those containers very cheaply a few years ago. We are very near a port city, and once those big ships unload their Chinese garbage they can't give those containers away. The place he bought them from charged a few hundred bucks per container, free delivery.

A lot of work sites are using them and converting them to portable workshops, generator sheds, etc. This is the first I've heard of a shooting range.

:) Chris, like I said this lock down is starting to work on me :)
Our Governor don't want us to leave the state but his wife can go down to Florida and when questioned about it he said it's none of your business :?
I sure would like to shoot the Buzz memorial but it's best I don't go and take the chance of carrying the bug to a shoot. This is a hot spot so it's best to think of making indoor ranges and silencers like taking 12 14" tires and fasting then to two 2X4 to hold them together and you have a silencer :D tried it and it cuts down the muzzle blast but it's hard to set it up in front of the bench when you want it.
But again the smoke hangs in the tires unless you have a fair breeze in the right direction.

I know how you feel Kurt. All of the ranges around here are closed. I was out in the bush yesterday and did a little bit of off hand shooting with a lever gun and it sure was fun. :D Other than that I haven't done any shooting since all of this started.

If the weather is good early tomorrow I'm going to do it again :-)

I have a 130 yard range in my yard I been doing some shooting but mostly with the .22.
:) my normal yearly consumption of powder will drop from 4 cases + a year to maybe 1/2 case this year if this keeps up.
Enjoy the time in the bush it's more fun than a range. I just wish I still had free roaming in the local bush like I had as a kid but the Lawyer thing stopped that over the years for most parts.

Our local 200 yard range is again open for small organized activities of 25 or less. We shot a bullseye match Monday evening and have a .22 silhouette scheduled for Thursday. The range at Friendship is open to NMLRA members, but it looks like June will be the first BPCR match there since March. I did pick up an additional case of Swiss this week, since retail sales have again opened. It's the same lot that I have settled on with my testing in December and January.
