Cartridge Construction
Good Morning;
I would like to thatnk all for the kind response to my questions,,,, and I have another. I understand (correct me if I'm wrong), that the partial function of wads is to isolate the charge from the bullet, but also to keep powder compression and space the bullet into the correct position in the chamber.
Question, I will be using a bullet with lube rings, and I am trying to decide if I'll use a Grease Cookie. Do many of you experienced loaders recommend using one. I have read that some encapsulate the grease cookie between 2 cut wads of waxed paper, what is your opinion.
Thank you
Scott D

Re: Cartridge Construction
Grease cookie is sometimes used with paper patch ammo, it would be redundant to use it with grease groove bullets.

I agree, PP bullets only and not GG.
HOWEVER. load powder, compress, then put a wad, (veggie or plastic) then put TWO newspaper patches under the bullet.
they keep the wad from sticking on the bullet in flight.
flyers are caused by the wad sticking....

Or you can skip the newspaper. I haven't found a need for it.

I like the newspaper wads. Gives me something to read while wiping the bore for the next shot.

I agree with Bryany, but I do make a point of cleaning that bullet base very good, with a shop rag when it comes out of the lubrisizer and again with a newspaper draped across my knee before I seat it in the case. And lots of trigger time, no matter what kind of gun it all helps.

Re: Cartridge Construction
I always wondered about the newspaper - it seems that for some reason, wads tend to stick to the bullet base, but newspaper doesn't - weird... The point is to have nothing sticking to the bullet base, whether newspaper or wads. When a newspaper wad sticks to a bullet, it wouldn't be good for accuracy.

Re: Cartridge Construction
Has anybody ever recovered a bullet with a wad stuck to it? Not me. I've recovered an untold number of bullets for recasting and never found any. Please support your statement.

Re: Cartridge Construction
Woody, slightly off topic, but I’ve recovered a round ball with wad before. While shooting a cap and ball, I had a wide shot and saw a wad stuck to the target frame. Looking under the wad, there was a ball embedded in the wood. Although I knew wads could follow a short distance, never would I have though a felt wad could stay on the ball for 15 feet.

Re: Cartridge Construction
I have found wads past 100 yards on the ground, cards and plastic. I also have seen paper on the plywood target backer at 200 yards when I wet patched bullets. I quit wet patching when I saw that happen. I also found bullets with the patch still on then recovered from snow banks at 50 yards that were wet patched.

Re: Cartridge Construction
woody, I have recovered wads at the bottom of the 100 yard target many times. when I cut and use two newspaper wads, this ended the problem.
if one sticks to the bullet it is easily pulled off, two is necessary though.
free, easy and it works. been part of my loading for years...Ken

I have found paper stuck to the bullet base at 200 yards but never a wad.

Possibly reddish/pink & a light green one or two or more
